After 2008, the Left enjoyed crowing that “elections have consequences.” Consequences for thee, maybe, but not for me. In Wisconsin, there’s a sign of the shape of things to come in their utter refusal to accept the results of the 2010 election that saw the Badger State swept by the GOP. My New York Post column today takes a look at this troubling situation:
Well-heeled public-employee unions and die-hard Democrats are pressing their bid to undo Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s pro-taxpayer reforms, part of a conflict playing out in “blue” states across America.
Passed this year, Walker’s “budget-repair law” helped close a $3.1 billion shortfall, in part by restricting collective-bargaining privileges for government-worker unions and forcing them to chip in for their generous retirement and health-care benefits.
Enraged at this loss of privilege, labor and its allies have gone for a series of rollback tactics, including sending hordes of union goons to besiege the state capitol during the debate over the law’s passage, getting friendly judges to temporarily invalidate it and targeting six GOP state senators for recalls — an effort that fell one Senate seat short of returning Democrats to the majority.
Now they’re after the Big Enchilada — Walker himself.
Like the Islamists, the Taliban wing of the Democratic party seems to subscribe to the faux-democratic motto of “one man, one vote, one time.” Their other role model, of course, is the late Leonid Brezhnev and his now-buried Brezhnev Doctrine, which stated that once a country had embraced Communism, it could never go back.
But the unions simply can’t accept any rollback in what they regard as collective-bargaining “rights” over pensions and benefits — even when such “rights” are the exception, not the rule. (Federal employees don’t have them.) President Obama called Walker’s reform “an assault on unions,” and one local pol trotted out the usual Hitler comparison.
It was clear from the start of this fight that the “progressives” wanted to make Wisconsin an object lesson for others. Unions and Democrats have poured money and manpower into the state, waging a scorched-earth campaign of demonization against the governor.
Far from being “progressives” — a term that’s roughly a century old — much of the mossbacked Left is now more conservative than the conservatives, always and everywhere against rollbacks and change, bitterly clinging to their shopworn thirties socialism and their moth-eaten sixties Marxism. They’d be pathetic if they weren’t so persistent, and funny if they weren’t still so dangerous. Next November’s going to be a heck of a ride.
When Repubs overreach (and just because you get the majority of the votes, it does not mean that the majority is with you on everything), they have problems. Why they don't start with the things where they have a supermajority and gradually move to the stop point, I don't know. And I am a Republican.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI saw similar comments here in Ohio. So the answer to impending bankruptcy is....a slightly less powerful bankruptcy? Let's not be like states that balance their budgets without gimmicks and instead be like Illinois or California?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis wasn't done for overreach politically. This was done because the previous dem governor had run up a multi billion dollar deficit, raised taxes, and chased jobs out of the state.
Walker couldn't do anything else without harming the state further. The claims from the government employees that they would make those concessions if they could keep collective bargaining were proven to be lies.
So he did the right thing. And as a result the deficit was wiped out in a single 2 year budget. And no taxes were raised. WI even had a property tax freeze under the budget.
Schools that followed the plan kept teachers or even added them with the savings. The ones that didn't are now the poster children for the failure of democrat policies.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAre you really likening a democratic recall effort at the ballot box with the "Islamist Taliban?"
What rot.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseFunny thing. I have exactly the same thought every time you post.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHow did this post end up here? I made it in response to DrPIP.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYou make that response to basically everyone you disagree with, so I'm not surprised the comment script got confused.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAgreed. Completely over-the-top. Walsh would be through the roof if anyone on the left made reference to the "Taliban-wing of the Republican party" and rightly so. Neither wings of either party are anything like the Taliban.
Walsh can't write a blog post without either referencing his column/books or using sensationalistic rhetoric about those with whom he disagrees.

What do you mean "if," Sam? Folks on the left can barely go two minutes without comparing the right to terrorists. Turnabout is fair play.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"Turnabout is fair play."
Quite right! I think Jesus said it best when he said..
oh wait, never mind.
As to the Corner giving space to someone who states that Brezhnev is a role model for Democrats, well, I guess hacks with no actual skills of persuasion who resort to schoolyard taunts to get notice have gotta go somewhere. How charitable of the Corner to give him a home.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGood point about "if." I should say "when."
But no, turnabout it not "fair play" when it's rude, crude and obnoxious.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI agree entirely. I'm normally a lurker here, and this is only the second time I've been inspired to comment. Comparing a democratic effort to recall a governor, no matter how misguided those seeking the recall are, with the Taliban is simply ludicrous on so many levels. I thought NRO writers were supposed to be smarter than this.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI like this phrase: "bitterly clinging to their shopworn thirties socialism and their moth-eaten sixties Marxism"
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIf you weren't so overwrought it would be easier to take you seriously. One Steyn is enough, thank you. Cordially, Bill
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAt least Steyn is witty and original. I think of him as kind of a happy pessimist. Walsh just seems like an angry, lazy hack.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"For years now, I’ve been saying that the modern Democratic party is the unholy issue of thirties gangsters and sixties Marxists, a criminal organization masquerading as a political party, composed of thugs, lawyers, layabouts, and guilt-ridden dupes, and motivated entirely by a lust for power disguised as the phony virtue of “compassion.” " - Michael Walsh
That is all you have to know about the author. Next.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIt is all you need to know -- a clear and accurate description. Thank you, Mr. Walsh
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAnd that tells us all we need to know about RichinIowa. Cordially, Bill
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIf you want to know which party is The American Crime Party, I cordially invite you to compare the number of felony convictions between elected Republicans & Democrats since 1980.
One party consistently keeps breaking records for crime every time it puts its nominee in the White House. That its supporters keep beating the drum of personal integrity & "Family Values" is hardly surprising - in his heyday Al Capone was often heard to bemoan the tragic decline in contemporary morals, too.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOnly elections of Democrats are legitimate and have consequences. Republicans can only get elected by lying to stupid people using money from millionaires, billionaires and evil corporations. An election procured by fraud and stupidity shouldn't have consequences.
The mistake is believing that the two parties are the same but on different sides. The Democratic party is a revered institution dedicated to helping the poor and oppressed (to stay poor and oppressed, but hey, details). The Republican party is dedicated to preserving the ideals of Adolf Hitler. All Republicans are one of two people: J.R., a CEO with a corporate jet whose favorite activity is harming women and children. Or Earl, an uneducated Southerner in a pick-up truck with a gunrack and Confederate flag decal whose favorite activity is keeping the black man down.
If you don't believe me, watch MSNBC, they'll confirm it.
