E.J. on Occupy Wall Street’s Success

Text

Since E.J. Dionne is not an idiot, I think he’s trying something clever here. He understands there’s no tolerance on the left for criticism of the Occupy movement, so he just keeps saying OWS has been great and successful even as he offers it advice that runs contrary to its nature. He’s like a mediocre parent who wants his spoiled kid to behave better so he flatters the kid by saying he’s been just terrific, but maybe now the kid should do something completely different. I don’t think the column works on anybody outside the pro-OWS bubble. And I doubt it will work on the rabble defecating in public and harassing small children either. But if you read between the lines with an incredibly generous spirit, that’s what I think his column is about.
