Who Thought That Up?

I know that as the 2012 campaign heats up, there are bound to be Dukakis-in-the-tank moments, especially since the Obamians increasingly know that they have to win states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia by appealing to working-class conservative Democrats, particularly those dissected in Obama’s 2008 “clinger” speech.

But who thought that a huge, raucous NASCAR crowd would cheer Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, given that sending in the first ladies, in Johnny-come-lately-fashion, involved elements of transparent politicking, while NASCAR crowds, despite a traditional deference to the female gender, are neither reticent nor known to be liberal? The counterpart would be something like Mitt Romney’s wife speaking at a SEIU convention in hopes of carrying California, or Ron Paul’s spouse addressing the NAACP in hopes of winning D.C.
