I’d never heard of businessman and philanthropist Fred Meijer (whose death John Miller mentioned below) before I visited Grand Rapids last year. There’s actually more to see there than you’d think, including a vast botanical/sculpture garden Meijer established. The most memorable feature of the garden is a replica of the huge horse statute Da Vinci made for the Duke Milan, which Meijer paid for. This picture doesn’t do justice to how gigantic it is, but it gives you an idea:
If I had billions, there’s lots of things I would do with the money, but one thing would definitely be to commission huge, outsize statues of things.
