As a number of readers have pointed out, it would have been more accurate in our editorial to have described Rep. Barney Frank as the first member of Congress to have voluntarily come out as gay; Rep. Gerry Studds, who was obliged to admit his homosexuality during the 1983 House page scandal, remained in Congress for many more years.
Another reader reminds us that Representative Frank was not the first congressman to be caught in a gay-prostitution scandal. That particular distinction belongs to Maryland Republican Robert Bauman, who was charged with soliciting sex from a 16-year-old male prostitute. The charges were later dropped.
Man, what is it about Maryland Republicans? We moved from office holders who were (alleged) homosexual "johns" to candidates who were self-proclaimed (and later recanted) witches?
We have to be able to find at least one normal Republican in that state, small as it may be. Right?

Kevin, judging from your apparent admiration for homosexual "firsts," I bet the advent of a "Congressional Gay Caucus" would send a thrill up your leg.

I think I got a letter from you the other day. You're the red crayon guy, right?

No matter who Barney [had sex with], and no matter how [he had sex with them], he was a liability to the Republic.
Yes?
May I refer you to this?

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe former witch is not from Maryland, she's from Delaware. As for finding normal republicans, just go to the county level...most of them are pretty red, though because of three or four large blue counties, Maryland is Democratic on the state level.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSo how many gay Congressmen have we had that *weren't* involved in soliciting and/or running gay prostitution and/or destroying the US financial system via corruption and fraud? Oh wait, I'm not supposed to notice that am I? Curse me and my bigoted eyes!
