Newt’s not getting a lot of love from his former colleagues:
Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill are nervous about Newt Gingrich’s rise in the polls, with one member saying, “Newt’s hand is always six inches from the self-destruct button.”
The legislator, who served with Gingrich in the House, is one of many who are concerned the Georgia Republican will capture the 2012 presidential nomination. …
Gingrich this spring infuriated many Republicans in Congress when he blasted Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) Medicare reform plan.
Ryan, who has not yet backed a candidate for president, responded, “With allies like that, who needs the left?”
If Gingrich is the nominee, barring a dead girl or live boy in the Lincoln Bedroom, Obama wins. However hard he tries, he can’t stop being Newt. And that’s not someone middle-of-the-road Obama voters now suffering buyer’s remorse are going to vote for. (And no, this has nothing to do with immigration, I’m not being paid by the Romney campaign, and I didn’t get marching orders from Kathryn.)
"If Gingrich is the nominee, barring a dead girl or live boy in the Lincoln Bedroom, Obama wins. However hard he tries, he can’t stop being Newt."
Yeah, they said the same thing about Ronald Reagan in 1980
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuseno, they most certainly did not
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNewt Gingrich will not win the presidency, even if he is successful with his jaw-dropping political con job. Newt Gingrich = four more years of Obama, it's this simple.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYeah, they said the same thing about Ronald Reagan in 1980.
Newt ain't Reagan. he could not carry Reagan's jock.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGingrich = Reagan
Sir, your post is made of awesome!
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseReagan was a cowboy. Gingrich is just a cow. Newt, and his supporters, have bought the hype about his intelligence. Newt thinks he is smarter than he is.....a nasty trait we see all too often in Obama. Reagan was much smarter than he claimed...in other words modest. He didn't have to go out and tell people how smart he was; in fact quite the opposite...he used the elite's underestimation of him to great advantage. When either Obama or Gingrich supporters tell you how smart their candidate is, watch out. Neither has shown any unusual eruditiion and both have way too high self-images and egos.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWho? Who said this?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe language is more restrained here than over at American Spectator, but I'm starting to wonder. Are Mark Krikorian and Quin Hillyer the same person? Has anybody ever seen them in the same place at the same time? The Newt-phobia is intense in "both" of "them."
And, yeah, I'm just kidding.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWho said Romney had to pay you, Mark?
You criticize Gingrich for holding a better position on immigration than Romney does.
Do you stand for anything if you're willing to support Romney, he of the "I can't have illegals I'm running for office" and "They ought to be able to apply like anybody else---whether it's in this country or not is immaterial" persuasion?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseTeflon: You have promised that if NRO endorses Romney you will cancel your NR subscription and stop commenting on the Corner. What if they endorse Gingrich? Will you make a similar commitment? I'm just trying to find some sort of silver lining in a potential Newt nomination.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAnd they said that Romney is the only one who can win against someone polling as the worst president in modern times, ignoring that Romney can't get better than 25% support with his own party. And McCain was just the man to woo "moderates". And Christie needs to tone it down a bit. And Romney is a conservative who will govern as a conservative despite, well, just about everything in his past.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"And they said that Romney is the only one who can win against someone polling as the worst president in modern times"
Is this a serious statement? Have you forgotten the polling record of the last guy in the WH so quickly?
Geez, I swear that some of you guys live in a fantasy world...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI think sometimes to the GOP, 'modern times' must mean any time in the last 3 years.
They seem to have completely forgotten why Newt was removed from his leadership position and are artificially inflating his favorables only because of a lack of alternatives.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI don't like Romney. He's a gold plated phony. But, he's better than Newt, who is a pompous megalomaniac. That's what we're trying to replace.
No Newts!
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseMark, thank you for the continued validation of your skills as a political hack. I am consoled by the fact that virtually everything you say is counter-factual to reality. To whit:
"A Rasmussen Reports poll of likely GOP primary voters released today has Newt Gingrich at 38 percent and Mitt Romney at 17 percent. None of the other candidates’ support is in the double digits."
"Results from an American Research Group poll of likely GOP primary voters in Florida: Newt Gingrich (50 percent), Mitt Romney (19 percent), Herman Cain (10 percent), Jon Huntsman (3 percent), Rick Perry and Ron Paul (2 percent), Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Buddy Roemer (1 percent)."
"...a Rasmussen Reports poll of likely voters finds that in a general election match-up, Newt Gingrich would get 45 percent to President Obama’s 43 percent."
From the home page poll at NRO regarding the percentage of people who have a "Better Impression" of Mitt Romney at this stage of the campaign versus earlier - 23%. The same 23% that is his "base".
Just a reminder, Tom Tancredo was running for President in 2008. He is not a choice this time. But do keep reminding us how Obama is "inevitable" against Gingrich. Because that has worked out real well for the Romney team.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAnd you think Romney has a better shot? It's going to be an uphill battle to defeat Obama no matter who. I want an activist president who will try to "undo" the Obama years. Romney would have perfect in '08 (I voted for him), but now we need a wrecking ball in office. Everyone talks about the "not-Romney" vote, I'm that vote for the reason I just stated.
Matt
I'm not even a Newt supporter but it irks me when people quote what he said back in May about the Ryan plan, which is perfectly legit, but don't bother with what he said afterward, which offered a hell of a lot more detail and doesn't make him sound like a nutjob, and which is just as crucial to know about when trying to judge the man.
Romney requires the same treatment. Everyone does. There's plenty of ammo to use against Gingrich, but withholding information is a journalistic sin too many responsible people lust after.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abusewhat do expect at National Romney Online ...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThey're getting to sound as pathetic as Peggy Joseph and the mmm mmmm mmmmm, Barack Hussein Obama crew of the left. mmm mmmm mmm, willard mitt romney, he'll govern as a conservative if you let him, mmm mmmm mmmm. If only Romney had done something conservative when he had a chance to govern. Christie managed to do so in a liberal state. Why couldn't Willard?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe pro-Romneys sound as bad as Peggy Joseph and those mmm mmm mmm BHO kids. Mmm Mmm Mmm, Willard Mittens Romney, Mmm Mmm Mmm, he'll govern like a conservative no matter what he's done in the past, Mmm Mmm Mmm.
