Russia helped South Ossetia break away from Georgia 20 years ago, but now an independent candidate appears to have beaten the Kremlin’s favorite, the results were invalidated, and there are thousands protesting in the streets. When Senator McCain and Max Boot call for sending American troops to the capital of Tskhinvali, let’s not.

(And, in case you’re wondering, the local name for South Ossetia is Khussar Iryston, in case they insist on our changing our name for the place. For trivia fans, the Ossetians are the remnant of the Sarmatians and Alans of antiquity.)
