In his speech before the Republican Jewish Coalition, Newt Gingrich just pledged that, if elected, he would ask John Bolton to be his secretary of state.
More Gingrich flip-flopping? Didn't he have some nasty criticism for Bolton a few years back when he (Gingrich) was shouting about how the Surge in Iraq was wrong or something?
He didn't say she would be "... an even better Secretary of State.", but that it is more fun to be Secretary of State, hence, "... she probably would have an an even better time ..."
IOW, with more travel to exotic places to meet interesting people and be feted nearly every place you go, SoS is a more fun job.
BTW, she already was the SoS at the time Newt made those comments.
“If she (Clinton) would take it she would be terrific,” he told me." - Newt Gingrich on whether Hillary Clinton would make a good Secretary of Defense.
Quote - "The former speaker of the House said he was impressed with Clinton when they served together on the Transformation Advisory Group for the Joint Forces Command."
Newt has been quoted repeatedly, praising Hillary Clinton, before and after she became Secretary of State. The old Beltway Insider is a major con artist of the worst kind. External Link
"Mitt Romney told the Republican Jewish Coalition he would consider nominating key Cabinet positions as the GOP presidential nominee prior to the 2012 election so they could face off with current Cabinet officials."
You'll apparently point to literally anything to prove that Newt's ego is incomparable. Does Newt think highly of himself? Yes, obviously, but one can show that without having to measure him by ridiculous and hypocritical standards.
In other words, quit being such a hack for Romney. Build your case for your beloved candidate without putting your thumb on the scale.
Sheryl, first a disclaimer: I have serious reservations about Newt as POTUS. That said, any serious candidate should have a short-list of people he wants in his cabinet, and getting the word out that he wants Bolton at SecState is also, in fact, very good politics. Because what Newt really needs to do at this point is shore up the GOP base behind him. The Bolton announcement helps in that regard.

Schwarzenegger was born in Austria, you say? Look, nobody's interested in the ancient past. Let's just move forward. Family values social conservatives will back him enthusiastically, just as they're now endorsing Dr. Gingrich.
I'm not sure whether Gingrich, whose flip-flopping ways are becoming clearer and clearer, has always been such a great foreign-policy ally of Bolton...
As Jim Geraghty recently noted, Gingrich and Democrat George Mitchell wrote a report encouraging the US to increase the power of the UN, which was praised by the New York Times in an editorial in 2005. As the NYT wrote:
"Lawmakers should take the time to at least thumb through this report, especially those who have been demanding Secretary General Kofi Annan's resignation, supporting the ill-conceived nomination of John Bolton as the United States ambassador to the United Nations and backing the latest benighted attempt to withhold America's legally obligated dues."
I'm guessing that Gingrich's foreign policy views then probably weren't eye-to-eye with Bolton's. One more convenient flip-flop for Newt "Medicare Part D" "Fannie/Freddie Lobbyist" "Ethanol Lobbyist" "Amnesty" Gingrich?

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI like Mr. Bolton. The effort by the tired Beltway Insider to blind Our Base with placation is obvious. Remember when Newt believed Hillary Clinton would make a terrific Secretary of Defense and an even better Secretary of State?
"“I’m not sure she would have quite as much fun,” Gingrich added. “I think she probably would have an even better time being secretary of state.”"
Romney actually influences Obama to stop another vacation?
"After getting ripped by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney over his vacation plans, Obama told Senate Democratic leaders Wednesday that he will stay in town until Congress finishes work on the payroll tax holiday, unemployment benefits and other issues."

He's hiring already before he himself has been hired!?!
Good lord, Newt's ego knows no bounds, what's next Callista's plans for redecorating the Oval Office.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI like the idea of a vote for president being a vote for his (or her) team.

Let me guess, what serves as proof of Newt's boundless ego is probably also proof of Mitt's shrewd mind for running a campaign.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh please you aren't really trying to compare Newt's ego with anyone are you?
That's a fool errand.
Ego is the only place Newt will beat Obama in 2012.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI would agree with you if he had made a list, but he didn't.
Newt is projecting not only winning the primary now but projecting winning the White House now as well.
Confidence is one thing but Newt is getting way too egotistical...and everyday he seems to be getting worse.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYes, that's what we want--a candidate who isn't sure of his ability to win! Someone like Third-Place Mitt!
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThat's a home run with Security Conservatives.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI think Newt is a man of poor character who might implode in a general election.
But I admit...this makes me want to support him anyway. :)
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIs there any fresh people besides Neo-Con retreads from the Bush II administration? Didn't people learn from the debacle in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI like the idea of naming the whole team, too.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI hope he's checked this with Bolton on this. It would be embarrassing if Bolton came out and endorsed somebody else.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGood point, two-seven-oh.
John Bolton himself seems a bit taken aback... and not altogether thrilled by this development.
