Mitt Romney will be missing in The Gift of Life premiere audience, as well as Ron Paul, a pro-life doctor, and as Jon Huntsman. When I asked Governor Huckabee if tonight amounts to an endorsement application test, Huckabee gives them all a pass. “More than anyone” he tells me, “I recognize that candidates have frantic schedules and all can’t come to every event. Those who don’t come aren’t snubbing the pro-life issue, but those who do are showing that they believe it to be a priority and that is significant.”
Interestingly, Nancy Keenan from NARAL takes the premiere as an opportunity to hit Romney anyway, worried he might actually be who he says he is on her issues (not actually the weathervane he is frequently portrayed as) — and therefore not a party beholden to her.
It is nice to see, perhaps Mr. Huckabee has matured a little. His response is decent.
Sadly, there is a regretful story, which again exposes the very misguided inspiration of a few who oppose the fine Private Sector offering with Mr. Romney:
"The new political director for Newt Gingrich’s Iowa campaign “agreed to step away” from the job after it came to light that he had said some evangelicals believe God would reject Mitt Romney because of his Mormonism."
Like the misguided populist resentment against a "wealthy" Free Market success, this is not conservative. Nor is it even Christian in my personal opinion. It is deeply regretful, and will only end up weakening all. It is evidence of the self destructive identity fashion enabling the very worst.
We simply have to do better. 2012 is essential. And this garbage cannot be allowed to push us all off a cliff.
