Might as well let it all hang out. Inside the new December 31, 2011 issue is Mark Steyn’s “The Gingrich Gestalt,” Kevin Williamson’s “How Speaker Newt Balanced the Budget, And Why President Newt Would Not,” Kris Kobach on how Gingrich’s amnesty plan would reward criminals and make the law arbitrary, and Jonathan Adler on Newt’s “longstanding love-hate relationship with environmental reform.” Plus other pieces and columns from John Yoo, Jay Nordlinger, James Lileks, Dan Foster (on Tim Tebow), Matthew Spalding, Florence King, Ross Douthat, Rob Long, and more. You’ll want to read this issue, so we heartily recommend you start your NR Digital subscription today.
That is a great cover, it reminds me of one of my favorite looney toon characters.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIt appears that the commenters who were alleging that NR/NRO was conspiring to defeat the alternatives to Romney were onto something. I feel like a sucker for thinking that I was getting honest and unbiased conservative analysis of the primaries prior to this wall-to-wall coverage.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuseunbiased conservative? lol
This an opinion journal, they have opinions, sometimes they even choose to endorse a candidate, get over it.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIt's not noteworthy or disturbing that each one has his/her own opinion. What IS disturbing is that they all appear to be so much in lockstep with a coordinated opinion ("Get on board or else!") - THAT smacks of stuff that in antithetical to me (and apparently many others).

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIf you don't think it's surprising or newsworthy that NR/NRO apparently decided to put out a coordinated 'Stop Newt' issue, that's your business. Of course, I suspect you're one of the commenters who reads every post with your #1 foam finger in hand and is just looking to cheer on your preferred candidate in the Big Game.
Me, I just think it's notable and goes against the denials that we've heard for months that NR/NRO was calling it down the middle. It strains credulity to believe that the entire masthead of NR would be so unified on the subject of Gingrich.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI don't think Gingrich is a great candidate - nor am I sure whether I'd vote for him, if given the opportunity - but this reads as if the writing assignments started with the outcome ("Make Gingrich unacceptable") foreordained. This reads as desperate, and goes to the credibility of the enterprise.
It is the December before the Iowa caucus. What did they do 4 years ago, they gave their opinions on the candidates. Then they endorsed Romney. They do this whenever there is a presidential primary. Like clockwork.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI would expect the 'opinions on the candidates' to (1) display a bit more variety than we see here and (2) not be purely focused solely on stopping a single candidate.
Do you think they just happened to review all author submissions after deadline and realized that they had a full issue of anti-Gingrich pieces?
It's weird, unprecedented in my memory as a subscriber, and a little dubious.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis surprises you just how? The fix is in and you had better get used to it. The anointed one has been chosen(Where have I heard that before?) We should be better than the Dems but we're not apparently.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI have a bridge for sale!
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI know, right? The sad thing is, this sort of blanket coverage is something I expect to see in places like the WaPo when it's going after a GOP candidate in Virginia.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNice cover.
You know, it's getting harder to tell the difference between the mannerisms of the socialists, and conservatives that stridently profess they are not.
Hayek knew the truth. So do I. And conservatives and NR validate his reasons why he states he was not a conservative everyday.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI didn't use a "Hayekian" economist; I used the source.
Here's the source, which relates to what my post was all about...

It's also clear that the subject of my post flew over your head. I wasn't talking about how scary Gingrich was, or who you should vote for in the nomination process.
I'm really not surprised, Richard
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis was the backup choice for the cover art. The original idea was for a wild-eyed Newt to be sporting an Afro and have an AK-47 slung across his chest.
But that thought that would be too subtle for us rubes to get, so they went with Newton the Martian instead.
BTW, doesn't this comparison make Mitt = Daffy Duck? Perry can play the part of tongue-tied Porky.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSo will all of these Newt bashing (which I don't mind) pieces also include glibly throwing other candidates under the bus while doing Romney butt kissing like your editorial?

these tools actually think they can get jobs in a Romney adminsitration ...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI don't think Newt was saying "Where's the kaboom" after your cover story yesterday.
