‘Colorful’ Lifestyles

by John Derbyshire

Nice to see King Farouk get a mention from Mark and Jay. He was a staple in the tabloid newspapers of my childhood home, an emblem of dissipated mega-rich lifestyle for the rationed, socialized, bombed-out inhabitants of postwar England to get indignant about. Farouk shared that spotlight with a certain Lady Docker, now even more comprehensively forgotten (though not of course by Wikipedia).

Farouk has a walk-on part in my recent review of Lawrence Durrell’s Alexandria Quartet, concerning which I’m sure you’ll be hearing more in 2012: it’s the author’s centenary.
