2008 Redux

by Rich Lowry

Politico had a piece on how Romney could be replicating McCain’s path to the nomination. This always seemed his likeliest path, but the parallels are uncanny: he’s working from the center out in the party; he’s benefitting from a divided opposition; he hasn’t had much in the way of negative ads run against him; and if Santorum is strong in Iowa, but Perry and Gingrich stay in the race, he just might be able to eke out a victory in South Carolina. (Ramesh had a good analysis in Bloomberg about why there’s a natural gravitational pull toward this kind of result.)
