If you had to pick a nominee to face President Obama solely on the basis of tonight’s debate –a nd not just the president but the combined forces of the MSM supporting him, like ABC’s moderators — it would surely be Romney, which tells you who won, and decisively.
None of the candidates except Paul had a bad night, and Rick Santorum solidified his clear status as the alternative to Romney, but the much-anticipated Newt attacks on Romney barely materialized and indeed there isn’t even a memorable anti-Mitt line from the entire affair, unless it was in Chinese and hasn’t been translated yet. The former Massachusetts governor was poised, funny, informed, and demonstrated again and again the key media skill that will be needed between now and November: The ability to turn the MSM’s questions back against Obama, to call absurd questions on their face, and to constantly elevate the immediate inquiry to the higher question of the country’s direction.
Being willing to push back against the MSM with the right amount of disdain is a delicate balancing act, easily overdone. But it is what Romney did with the astonishing exchange with George Stephanopoulos on contraception, and when George doubled and then tripled down on the inanity, not only did the audience boo the former Clinton front-man, the nation groaned, and Romney deftly hammered him again and again. If it was a fight it would have been stopped, and the exchange seemed to have rattled both Diane Sawyer and Stephanopoulos who struggled to ask good questions or follow-up appropriately throughout.
You can’t plan a “I paid for this microphone” moment, but Romney’s “silly” rebuff to Stephanopoulos was pretty close, and Newt’s following slam on how the reverse sort of question is never asked completed the rout of ABC.
Romney won. Santorum got the silver. ABC lost. Big time.
As long as Santorum's around, we're gonna hear about birth control and gay marriage. Might as well get used to it.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAgreed, Democrats are desperately trying to stereotype their opposition again. Same old story. And with Santorum it can be affective. Rick has a way of letting this become a weakness, instead of a strength.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGee, Old Fan, you had nothing but good things to say about Santorum until last week.
What happened?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseJeez, give us a break NR! Hewitt has been pimping for Romney since God knows when, 2008?, do we really need him sucking up space that could be better occupied by ANYBODY in the Corner as well?!?
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"no one had a bad night except Paul..." Good grief what a hack Hewitt is. I listened to part of his radio show yesterday about the NH primary and he acts like Paul is not even running, even though he is projected to win 2nd, far ahead of Santorum and Gingrich.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhy is it inane when sanatorium, his chief rival, does have a clear position on it?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI agree that there was a lot of follow-up on the Griswold question and that George and ABC came off looking poorly.
But I must say that I was yelling at the TV as well when Romney repeatedly dodged the question. Romney went to Harvard fricking Law School and knows quite well what Griswold v. Connecticut is. And Romney absolutely pretended like he didn't know that the Supreme Court had ruled on the issue, and that it is, of course, probably the most important substantive due process case out there. Give Santorum credit - he has come out and said that Griswold was wrongly decided. Romney totally ducked it.
So I guess I feel a little bit for Stephanopolous there. I think he was just astonished that Romney would flat out lie about not knowing that the Supreme Court had decided the issue. And he flat out would not answer the question. Romney did excellently tonight, and the short-term politics of that exchange probably benefits him. But I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up having to flip-flop yet again and later acknowledge that he, of course, knows that decision. And I have to think that he supports the holding of Griswold too.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIs anyone here surprised that Hewitt declared Romney the winner...so the republican party is going nominate the grand father of Obamacare as its candidate????
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI agree ABC was horrible. Mitt got his moment with slapping down George. But Santorum, Perry and Newt all did fine too.
Paul's debate performance was not very good.
And Gov. Huntsman, please do not answer questions in Mandarin.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhat a surprise that Hewitt thought Romney won. So the republican party is going to nominate the grandfather of Obamacare as its leader, it's McCain all over again.. Go ahead Hugh call us all nutters out for not agreeing with a guy who worked for Nixon and Ford..

Without a doubt...
Romney had the Democratic Pundits with ABC spinning. The ability is vivid, even engaged the challenge with savvy wit. Romney again, shows he is the best of the offering for the Nomination.
However, I have to disagree with Rick doing as well as some suggest. Paul's challenges about Rick's Washington Record are damaging, especially because of Santorum's response. Rick's opposing the "Right to Work", his many Earmarks, etc., all look very poor for someone now suddenly being peddled as the ideal. Rick doesn't handle the challenge well either. Not as badly as Gingrich did when confronted by his graft via Fannie and Freddie, but still, it is not a positive for him. Very hard for anyone to live up to the ideal, but Rick is not coming close Also, in terms of social convictions, Santorum does not offer an attractive presentation. His conviction maybe strong, but politically it comes across poorly.
Ironically, on those social issues, such as 'gay marriage' (things we assume Rick would be strong), it was Romney who handled it the best. Very sound.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI completely agree with this comment! Mr. Santorum's convictions are sound and I do believe he is a good person. However, he talks about moral issues in a way that I believe will rub many voters the wrong way. Any other Anti-Romeny available?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseRomney shined with many great answers like he helped start Staples, Europe is not doing well in Europe, he quoted the Declaration of Independence, and he made ABC look silly. Newt and Santorum also had some good answers, and Perry did well on the energy issue, but Romney sounds and looks like a President already.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhat a lame post.
Another pathetic attack on the media.
When it comes to the media, conservatives are the ultimate wimpy victims.
This is getting old. The only predictable thing about conservatives is that they will whine like little babies about the media. One year, the lesson is that we learned from Reagan that deficits don't matter. The next year, addressing the deficits conservatives have caused is much more important than addressing unemployment or anything else.
It is no wonder that Mitt Romney is the ideal conservative candidate. Like many conservatives, he is a consummate flip flopper with no core values. But he sure does have grievances against the mainstream media.
The Republican Party is the victim party. That is their only consistent principle.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh HAHAHAHAHAHA nice try pal. Nice try. It's just completely, totally, definitively unbelievable though.
We have president Obama because the media would not go after him. The media told us to nominate McCain. We did. And then they proceeded to slaughter him, while fawning over Obama.
We had a debate tonight moderated by a FORMER CLINTON OFFICIAL!! COME ONE! When have you ever seen a debate moderated by a former Republican official who worked with a Republican president. Has it EVER happened?
Give me a break. Your nonsense, lies, and dismissal is so 1990. We don't buy the garbage anymore. We don't fall for the bias. We have the internet. We finally have freedom of access to the media, and we will not be swayed by your baseless attacks.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYou're not even worth replying to anymore.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abusedid you watch the debate? i'm a registered democrat and it was stupid. romney's expression was priceless. he really couldn't believe he was hearing the question. abolishing contraceptives? really.
not only would the people revolt, the pharmaceutical companies wouldn't allow it.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseDavie,
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhen we see Karl Rove hosting a Democrat debated on FOX News, you'll have a valid point. Until then, you're just another liberal idiot with nothing to support your girlish feelings.
I bit after the Romney/Stephanopolis exchange, did you not notice the perspiration dripping off of Stephanopolis's nose. I think he felt the heat after looking like a major joke. I was just waiting for someone to remind the audience that he was a former Bill Clinton campaign spokesman (only Newt would be that bold.)
