Framing the Keystone Debate

The president’s decision to veto the XL Pipeline is no surprise. The fact that he was compelled to talk about it, is.

Certainly no one expected Obama to make any other decision, given the need to secure his green base and grab its cash for his campaign — nor does anyone expect the decision to survive the 2012 election, even if he’s reelected. The White House revealed its true position in its jobs report last week, which gave shale natural-gas-production companies a giant wet kiss, saying these industries “will boost investment and exports in the coming years, generating new jobs.” That applies to the shale oil industry, as well.

No, what’s surprising and impressive is how Senate Republicans pushed Obama to the wall by attaching to the bill approving the pipeline a provision requiring the president to sign on in 60 days or publicly declare the pipeline was not “in the national interest.”

That’s using the legislative bully pulpit the way it should be used. Now for the next seven months Republicans in the House and Senate need to compel the president and other Democrats to publicly take the losing side on one issue after another by passing legislation on everything from investigating Solyndra and making English the official language to declaring the Weather Underground an official terrorist organization and stripping former members of their American citizenship.

Then let’s see which party has the best attack ads for the election.

EXPAND

Sounds like a wonderful idea. Do you have a party in mind who could press such an offensive because we already know that for the most part the Stupid Party (aka Republicans) have no stomach for conflict and are more interested in remaining junior partners in the expansion of government?

Dirk:

Seriously? "Junior Partners"?

When did that happen? As I see it, they are still mired as first-year associates.

Their best and brightest in the GOP were allowed to become senior associates, or of-counsel, in the project to oversee Leviathan's perpetual expansion, as evidenced perfectly by the Ryan Budget.

But, members of the partnership? The left would NEVER share partnership points with such useless tools.

Unfortunately I think the decision will survive the election. Not because I think Obama will stick to his word, but because I don't think the Canadians will stick around waiting for a year. They have said that they could and would build the pipeline across to the Pacific and ship the oil out to China. Why should they wait a year to see what happens here?

What a great idea! The public will respond strongly to this. In fact, such a course has a very real potential for driving approval of congressional Republicans into single digits, and approval of Congress overall into negative territory.

...and approval of Congress overall into negative territory.

Congress has had below-50% approval ratings since approximately forever.

And yet, ninety percent of all congressmen get returned to office almost every election.

People hate Congress. But they don't hate their own congressmen.

"investigating Solyndra and making English the official language to declaring the Weather Underground an official terrorist organization and stripping former members of their American citizenship."

Wow, that sounds like a list of really pressing, important issues.

"Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket." External Link

If the Repubs aren't stupid, (okay, a stretch) the above should become as familiar to every American as the lyrics to "Happy Birthday to You."

Every time the monthly unemployment figures come out and show unemployment over eight percent, people should be reminded Obama killed thousands of actual shovel-ready jobs - along with a film clip of his claiming that there's no such thing as shovel-ready jobs.

When gas prices go up, people should be reminded Obama shot down the oil pipeline.

When Iran threatens to close the Straits of Hormuz, people should be reminded that Canada has never threatened to cut our oil off, ever.

And people should be constantly reminded that Obama prefers to have Canadian oil pumped onto Chinese tankers than to the U.S.

What you suggest is way beyond the competence of the GOP. What would be great if someone could film a CHICOM tankier being filled in Vancouver, and title it "Obama's Job's Policy". It would go viral in a day.

Love it. Follow it up with few Chinese refineries spewing black smoke and dumping waste into the Yangzte and title it "Obama's Environmental Policy"

Film it from Port Angeles or Anacortes, Washington as it steams out the Straits of Juan de Fuca.

How do we argue with a President that believes "more jobs are created by extending unemployment than Keystone" Thats an amazing position...and what an incentive for folks.

"The White House revealed its true position in its jobs report last week, which gave shale natural-gas-production companies a giant wet kiss, saying these industries 'will boost investment and exports in the coming years, generating new jobs'."

Of course, the opposite may be true: Obama's veto may reveal his true intentions, hardened by a successful re-election bid, and this fodder Herman quotes may simply be lip service for Obama to prove he actually cares to see economic activity increase.

Alas, the same hard leftists whose parochial and narrow interests were served by this decision are the ones whose political agenda is geared entirely to dialing back economic activity not only in the US, but around the world. And Obama, as their ally-in-chief, just may share that goal, as he just advanced it.

It appears likely also that Herman is under the delusion that we have a conservative party here in America. The political advice he rendered stands no chance of being acted on by the GOP.

"Of course the opposite may be true"!

Obama is trying to have it both ways? By making contradictory statements while punting any real decisions into the next election cycle? Why, it's almost like he's a typical politician or something!! ;-)

FWIW I'm thinking a two-pronged assault on Obama is the best way to go: 1) conservative messages attacking his liberalism (what NRO readers want to see), but also 2) liberal attacks pointing out the chasm between his rhetoric and his actions (Obamacare isn't single-payer, Gitmo is still a prison, and in this case he calls for more ungreen energy development at the same time he postpones a decision on the pipeline -- this can be spun as a cynical move from both ends of the political spectrum, and should be. Isn't that what 527's are for?)

Apparently Nebraska does not have a final approved route yet. The government obviously cannot evaluate and approve a pipeline that does not have a route fully approved on the state level. When Nebraska evaluates and approves the final route on state level - the federal administration will approve it. The fact is that the Republicans are hurting the pipeline because they want to make it a political issue and push it at all costs before the election. The Republicans obviously do not care if the pipeline is approved or not - only care if they can make a political issue out of it!

Arthur Herman for President, or at least head of the RNC!

"Bully" in TR's famous phrase "bully pulpit" does not mean "bully" as in "the bully in the school yard." Rather, TR's "bully" means, to quote Merriam-Webster, "excellent —often used in interjectional expressions "

So, does TR's famous phrase apply to the Senate? Were they speaking, persuading, using the excellent platform that they have from which to speak? Or were they the legislature using their legislative muscle to bully the president into a corner? I think more the latter, and good for them.

This guy is a complete fool.

I am 100% certain that moves to strip people of the American citizenship would backfire in a very major way.

Mean spirited attacks. From Republicans politiicans. Fits right into the stereotypes that people believe about Republican politicians anyway.
