Unforced Error on ESPN

Text

The sorrow at the loss of coaching legend Joe Paterno extends well beyond Penn State University.  News coverage of JoePa’s death necessarily mentions the ignomious end of his career.  At ESPN this included reading a statement from Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant coach whose alleged conduct helped bring Paterno’s career to a premature end.  Yet were it not for the scandal — that is, had Sandusky not been indicted on 40 counts of sexual abuse of young boys — his statement would have been ignored.  Sandusky had not coached with Paterno for over ten years, and he is only now a nationally known name because of alleged crimes.  Sandusky could have released a statement, and no one would have cared.  As it is, he released a statement, and ESPN should have had the moral judgment to place it in the round file.
