There’s a front-page WaPo report that “Liberal groups join in Fla. ad war against Mitt Romney”:
Newt Gingrich isn’t the only one trying to beat Mitt Romney in Florida.
Several liberal groups are funding new ad campaigns in the Sunshine State targeting the vulnerable GOP presidential candidate, part of an unusually bold effort by Democratic supporters to bolster President Obama’s chances in November by influencing the Republican primaries.
The plans include a $1 million ad buy from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the nation’s largest public employee union, which is focusing on Romney’s history as head of the private-equity firm Bain Capital. The Service Employees International Union and Priorities USA Action, a pro-Obama super PAC, have also jointly launched a Spanish-language radio campaign in Florida accusing Romney of having “two faces” on immigration issues.
The push signals a growing belief among Democrats that they may have a real chance at helping to derail Romney, who has long been viewed as Obama’s most formidable GOP opponent but is reeling from a loss to Gingrich in South Carolina. Gingrich and Romney are locked in a tight race ahead of Tuesday’s Florida primary.
Or, to adapt that old New Jersey tourism ad narrated by Tom Kean: “Newt, AFSCME, and the SEIU — Perfect Together”.
Gingrich is now, objectively speaking, the pro-Obama GOP candidate.
Considering the apparent swing back in Romney's favor, it's unlikely chicanery from the left will significantly affect the race.
That said, why in the world do commentators on the right think it's original or productive to fixate on what opponents supposedly think of the Republican nominee?
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse... because Mitt is a candidate without merit, so the only thing they have going for them is this mind game about Democrats supposedly fearing campagining against Mitt.
Right. The guy who can barely win an election, who's hvaing the establishment try to hand him the nomination on a platter while loosing every single demographic in South Carolina is making Obama shake in his boots.
But yeah, the Democrats fear the raw electoral power that is Mitt Romney. [roll eyes]
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh, I don't know.... anything that helps Mitt sharpen is campaign skills seems OK to me.
Also, how odd that a front-runner (is he still?) whose been running for President more or less constantly for 5 years should have to sharpen his skills..... for a man claiming organizational skills, couldn't have found time in those years to prepare a little better? Was he really not anticipating any of the hard questions? Or the easy ones?

. The Republicans will have so severely damaged their entire field that Obama strolls back in for a second term. The utter glee and abandon former associates of Newt have shown in flaying him is distressing. Romney’s attacks on him haven’t helped and Newt’s return fire against basic capitalistic founding principles has not helped. Are there no adults at the RNC? Here is the dilemma—Romney IS at a minimum a MODERATE based upon his record and it is not a stretch to call him a Liberal Republican which has really turned off the base who has been stung by W and McCain in the recent past. Newt has baggage galore, much of which the base deplores—but have been willing to overlook some of it to just get someone more conservative than the Liberal Romney in there. However, now the well for both is beyond toxic and becoming more so. Sadly, the “conservatives” in the Republican Party have chosen to sit this one out. Of course my choice is a Rubio or Ryan and they have both declined. (That gives me some heartburn for there are times in this life when one must step forward, no matter the personal cost.) We have a dearth of Statesmen in politics today and far too many “politicians.” The rub is that to get to be a “Statesman” you must first be a “politician”. Few of our politicians have the courage to even make the effort at transition. Sadly, we don’t have any leadership at the RNC or among the conservative wing of this party willing to even try the “late entry” or shoot for the brokered convention. We seem to be doomed—not by actions of the voters but by the ambitions of Romney and Gingrich and their marauding supporters who seem to value having their man win no matter the cost, placing their interests above what this nation needs to survive.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWell, maybe if the Party leaders hadn't gone to every A-list candidate and told them not to run so that Romney could get the nomination we'd be in much better shape.
But no, they had to try to hand it to Mittens.
Stop meddling in the selection process. See what you did there? [rubs estblishment nose in the carpet.]

I would think this is a negative indicator, normally. If all your old shipmates are mouthing over your shoulder, "NO! Don't do it!", and shaking their heads, maybe it's because they know something.
(And, dude, I *know* you use paragraphs. What happened? Did your Enter key break?)
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI'm just amazed that any conservative can say with a straight face that the Left would rather go up against Mitt Romney than Newt Gingrich. Why aren't they throwing millions at attacking Newt at such a crucial point in the primary if that were the case?
A Newt nomination would be akin to Democrats nominating Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, and it looks like the GOP is finally coming to its senses on that reality.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOkay, the 'plans' are such and so--but where are the ads? There's an ad at the article--but it's by a PAC that's supporting Gingrich. I'm not seeing ads by liberal groups.
And the weirdest thing is, the Mitt fans have been blathering that Dems are ALREADY running ads against Mitt to help Newt--but the WaPo article seems to be acting as if this is a new thing--and making it pretty clear that there ARE NO ADS YET.
So the article helps Mitt by making Newt look bad........
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse... and thus is just more NRO hot air for Mittens.
Mission accomplished.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseA story that characterizes Romney as "the vulnerable GOP presidential candidate" is better suited for the op-ed page. Bias and agenda in the WaPo, say it ain't so...
