Contra Debate Claim, Gingrich Didn’t Offer ABC Friends to Rebut Marianne Gingrich Accusation

During last Thursday’s debate, when CNN moderator John King asked about Marianne Gingrich’s interview on ABC accusing Newt Gingrich of having requested an “open marriage,” part of Gingrich’s crowd-pleasing answer was this charge: “Let me be quite clear. The story is false. Every personal friend I have who knew us in that period said the story was false. We offered several of them to ABC to prove it was false. They weren’t interested because they would like to attack any Republican.”

Now, last night, King reported on his show CNN’s John King, USA that Gingrich had spoken inaccurately when he said that friends had been offered to ABC to rebut the story. “Well, tonight, after persistent questioning by our staff, the Gingrich campaign concedes now Speaker Gingrich was wrong both in his debate answer and in our interview yesterday,” King said.Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond says the only people the campaign offered to ABC were the speaker’s two daughters from his first marriage.”

This is more evidence that Gingrich is an untrustworthy, impulsive man who will say whatever he must to get what he wants and GOP voters should pay attention and not be distracted by the man's theatrical debate performances. He knew he was lying and would eventually be called out on that lie, which was intended to support his claim that his ex-wife is a liar. However, he also knew that more people would hear the lie that is favorable to him than the "oops" a week later that is not.

I agree Jenna. Yet more lies from one of the most cynical, dishonest primary candidates ever. Newt is repulsive on many levels, but his attacking Romney's free enterprise success is what totally turned me off.

If Newt wins the nomination, his repugnant behavior will be rewarded. I truly hope this doesn't happen.

You mean his "out-of-the-ballpark" answer was really just a cynical ploy to manipulate an angry conservative electorate? Say it ain't so!

I'll say it again, liberal media bias is real and it sucks and I love to see it called out. However, that instance was just Newt blowing a lot of hot air and using liberal media bias as a smokescreen. That only helps discredit the very real problem of liberal media bias and if we have Newt be the nominee then he will discredit the conservative movement. As soon as it is politically convenient he will switch to left-wing rhetoric just as he has been doing ALL THROUGH THIS CAMPAIGN.

As I have explained to my five year old, when you lie the bigger problem than the individual lie is the inability of others to know in the future whether you are telling the truth.

Newt caught in a lie? Again? I don't believe it. :)

Hey--does this count as an 'ad'? Because it sure looks like ABC is trying to make Newt look bad--but why would they do that? Don't they WANT Newt as the nominee? Wasn't there all sorts of innuendo after the debate about Newt being all pally with John King?

You really are flailing here, aren't you? Can't keep your points straight at all.

Don't be ridiculous. This is ABC defending themselves, which is a very normal thing to do. If someone falsely accused me then I would want to clear the record.

Jeez Loueez, It's like lying is Gingrich's default mode. What next, "I didn't have sex with that woman"? Cordially, Bill
