Dole Goes Nuclear

The Romney campaign sends along a statement by Bob Dole pasted below. Relations between Dole — an establishment figure in the party — and Gingrich were well known to be tense during the 1990s. Here it is:

I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

Gingrich served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. By 1997 a number of House Republican members wanted to throw him out as Speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when Newt could read the writing on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with President Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics like shutting down the government helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty bucket in his hand — that was a symbol of some sort for him — and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it, and I’m not certain he knew either.

The Democrats are spending millions of dollars running negative ads against Romney as they are hoping that Gingrich will be the nominee which could result in a landslide victory for Obama and a crushing defeat for Republicans from the courthouse to the White House. Democrats are not running ads against Gingrich which is further proof they want to derail Governor Romney.

In my opinion if we want to avoid a sweeping victory by Obama in November, Republicans should nominate Governor Romney as our standard bearer. He could win because he has the requisite experience in the public and private sectors. He would be a president in whom we could have confidence and he would make us proud.

"If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself."

If Romney gets the nomination, Second Amendment advocates, pro-lifers, social conservatives, and small government types will have no voice in the party. On every single one of those issues, Romney came down very left of center in his Massachusetts record. Even Obama, when he had a Democrat Congress, didn't try to bring back the Assault Weapons Ban. But Romney did in Massachusetts.

Dole is a decent man, but he's a RINO who lost to Clinton after running one of the worst campaigns in modern Presidential election history. To take his advice on Presidential elections is like asking the Cleveland Browns how to win Super Bowls.

BSkillet, Your totally right on all counts and your closer is a gem. I'd only add that as a "decent man" he should remember how he was villainized as "the Darth Vader of the Republican Party" back in the 70s. His reaction was to become a milquetoast RINO. Newt hasn't lost his mojo, if you know what I mean, while Dole was totally believable as a pitch-man for Viagra. I thought he was dead. Well, for all political purposes he died in 1996 and he should be a "decent man" and recognize it.

Dole wasn't beliveable in ED commercial...I guess a woman would have to be dead in order to get the experiment going....
When you said DEAD I assume you meant Bob Dole.
He should stay out of public life and never show his face or voice his opinion ever again!

Why does Dole -the loser thinks that we are interesated in his opinion- that is what I want to know!
He couldn't even have a commercial for ED to work!

There is plenty to be negative about Dole. The sham job he put on republicans for one. I know conservatives are clueless, as anyone who reads anything in this once useful rag could attest, but when it's such a blatant display...well...

Gingrich may have sat with Nancy; but Dole sat with these guys. Maybe he needs a change.

Maybe conservatives need a change. Be individuals.

Here's what another Nancy said about Newt in 1995: "The dramatic movement of 1995 is an outgrowth of a much earlier crusade that goes back half a century. Barry Goldwater handed the torch to Ronnie, and in turn Ronnie turned that torch over to Newt and the Republican members of Congress to keep that dream alive."
Dole needs to go back to Viagra commercials.

Wait... what?

"Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand — that was a symbol of some sort for him — and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it."

What an utterly random non-sequitur... I'm half-surprised Dole didn't mention how Newt stole BOB DOLE'S peanut butter...

Bob Dole knows that Newt did it! Bob Dole knows that Newt stole the strawberries!

Way to go Bruce. Excellent analogy! For those who don't get it, watch the classic movie "The Caine Mutiny."

I'm so glad someone mentioned Bob Dole's peanut butter. Whenever someone refers to him/herself in the third person I always think of that line and laugh.

The bucket was something for Dole to put his conservatism in. That's why Gingrich left with it empty every day.

Oh God, We've really lost NR to the world of Al Davis - 'just win baby'.

GASP! A guy who liked to fight the Democrats! And we might nominate him! Oh the humanity! What are we going to do with someone who actually wants to win!

No wonder Dole got killed in the '96 election.

Prepare now for the slimming of American patriot Bob Dole. Dole was not much of a candidate, I admit. But he was an honorable man of the kind that they specialized in during "the greatest generation." His words should be heard respectfully.

Is Bob Dole on weight watchers?

Dole was a terrible candidate and a terrible politician. He was a good man and great patriot. That makes him the wrong man to opine on what is right for the party, or for the conservative movement in general.

So, character and honor is something that should be ignored by the "conservative movement" over political ability?

I used to jape that Conservatism wasn't dead, that it only smelled funny.

It's dead, it smells.

Exactly. This basic point makes Bob Dole just about the worst person to trot out for a primary endorsement at a critical time in this election cycle, but a pretty good one to trot out during the general election campaign.

I sometimes wonder if Mitt Romney is trying to lose the prinary.

Explain to me what Bob Dole has done that warrants conservatives paying the slightest attention to his opinion. He is a "centrist," establishment Republican who sold out conservatism anytime he felt it got in the way of the Republican Party. We owe him nothing other than respect for his service during the Second World War.

I remember last year Dole advising Republicans to work with Obama. The guy is a RINO.
