Bush Rules Out a Brokered Candidacy

Jacksonville, Fla. — Former Florida governor Jeb Bush, a conservative favorite, tells NRO that he is not interested in entering the presidential race, even if the contentious GOP primary results in a brokered convention. “If there was one, I do think, in all honesty, that the candidates who ran, one of them should be the nominee,” he says. “But I doubt there will be a brokered convention… it’s never going to happen.”

Good for him. One of my objections to the whole brokered nominee thing was that his name was being floated. I just don't think it would work, too many negatives out there with Bush Derangement Syndrome and the conspiracy theories about Precott and Russians and... I think you get the point. But, I have to say that while they as a family haven't been perfect ('read my lips' and 'compassionate conservatism' - it's neither compassionate nor conservative: discuss), I have always liked them as a family and have never felt any cause to distrust them as such.

Conservative favorite? Really? Oh, you must mean a conservative favorite of the the NRO contributors. The name Bush is not exactly synonymous with conservativatism. Or have we bastardized its meaning to such a degree that the Bush clan is now its standard bearer?

"it’s never going to happen.”"

Never going to happen? At this point, how does it not happen?

I guess it depends on how strict a definition of "brokered convention" is being used. But, given the way there party seems to have coalesced around three different poles (or perhaps polls is better) - with Romney, Gingrich and Paul going never exiting stage left - I don't see how anyone gets to the requisite number of delegates before the convention starts. It seems like a second ballot is almost a safe bet.

Having said that, if Bush is talking about selecting a candidate that hasn't participated in a single debate or won a single delegate prior to the start of the convention, then I would agree with him; the chances of that happening are zero.

My thoughts as well a conservative favorite??? It's Costa, this is the same guy who wrote love letters to Christie trying to get him in the race.

If you want a 57-state landslide for Obama, Jeb's your candidate.

I'd like to see it, because I don't think the Republican Party will learn anything at all until it gets precisely zero votes in a national election ... or maybe a negative number of votes ... but those of you who still want R to win occasionally should avoid all Bushes forever!
