Komen drops grants to Planned Parenthood, Mike Bloomberg comes to the rescue:
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, responding to the controversy over a breast cancer advocacy group that cut off most of its grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening, said Thursday that he would make up a large part of the missing money.
Mr. Bloomberg, a billionaire with a long-term interest in public health, said he would give Planned Parenthood Federation of America a $250,000 matching gift — he will donate $1 for every new dollar Planned Parenthood raises up to $250,000.
Planned Parenthood has plenty of wealthy allies who are comfortable supporting the nation’s largest abortion provider, comfortable with its role as a mammogram middleman. I am not sure why Komen has to be demonized for its business choice.
It was ridiculous for Komen to politicize the issue of breast cancer. They completely destroyed their brand in less than 24 hours.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"politicize the issue of breast cancer?" So, Komen's decision to discontinue support to an organization that's sole purpose is to promote and perform abortions rather than give breast exams as they claim is political? As a charity, Komen has a responsibility to ensure that the donations they receive for breast cancer research and promotion of breast cancer exams/awareness actually goes towards that - not abortion.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI dont know why this article is so pointless. "I am not sure why Komen has to be demonized for their business choice as they do." Its not a business choice that they have violated it is what they stand for! Also they have even violated their own policy giving money to another organization that is currently under investigation!

They have not only violated the trust of the people but the values they once held!

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIt's amusing to see a double post from someone with the username "Techguy."

Perhaps because Komen is undermining its own stated mission and thereby undermining all of the volunteer hours and monetary donations of supporters who put worht their efforts with the understanding that without Planned Parenthood acting as a "middleman," many low-income women will not be linked with breast cancer screening services. These people further understand that Komen money does not go toward any PP services other than breast cancer prevention. Granted, it is possible that a more efficient system could be devised and implemented that does not involve PP. I'm all ears. But by acting to cut off services before such a system exists, Komen has "chosen" to bely its own mission. It's not a laudable position for an organization that should prioritize health outcomes over politicking (and which claims to do so).
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh, Komen is a "business" now? Well, if so, it's now a business with a throng of mad-as-hell "customers".
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse...and a bunch of new supporters who appreciate the fact that they've taken a stand against a foul organization like PP.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSo which is it?
Komen couldn't give money to an organization that was under investigation?
Komen made a "business" decision?
Komen made a political decision.
In the last 3 days they've argued the first 2 of the 3 and you've dutifully reported their drivel like the lapdog that you are.
That suggests that it's really 3.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI was bothered by the Komen/PP connection ever since I heard of it, because I am strongly opposed to elective abortion (in the first place.) I am also angered by Planned Parenthood because its representatives are so very, very mendacious in their public statements about their business. I would have been much happier about this change if Komen had simply said (and stuck to) "We're not going to give the mammogram money to PP because they don't provide mammograms." But all these different explanations and changing stories make me continue to be hesitant about Komen.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseDespite your "choice" dig, what is happening to Komen is exactly what Republican business philosophy intends. Komen will survive or fall based on the will of the market. Unfortunately, the will of the market is on the side of Planned Parenthood.
In the past 48 hours, Planned Parenthood has received more money than Komen ever gave them, and several high ranking Komen officials have resigned. To me that indicates that the decisions made by the top management do not reflect the will of a sizable portion of the country or its own members. Attempts to spin the decision as non-political have been laughable at best. It would probably have been better to admit it was a politically-motivated pro-life decision than to equivocate.
Komen has every right not to support Planned Parenthood. I have every right to give money to Planned Parenthood and not to Komen as a result of their decision. Time will tell if this will irreparably harm Komen's fund-raising going forward.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseBloomberg's intervention doesn't surprise. I am sick to death, though, of rich people telling poor people not to have children.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"I am not sure why Komen has to be demonized for its business choice."
You mean like the right demonized them before this business choice? Both the left and the right should be equally ashamed for politicizing Komen in such disgusting manners.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseQuite so. Kathryn knows perfectly well why someone would demonize an organization for its business choice, because she does it. In fact, we all have the right to criticize organizations for their business choices, and all of us likely do it all the time. This shouldn't be hard to understand regardless of your views on the issue.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIt's the ingratitude of PP for all of the free money that SGKF gave it that is most shocking. But PP's crocodile tears are delicious.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseBecause declining to fund a political organization like Planned Parenthood is different from actively funding them?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseRemember that to some people, declining to fund certain "artists" is the same as "censorship" -- as is deciding not to select one or two specific books for inclusion in a twenty-book reading list is "censorship." Same line of reasoning, although completely stupid.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI heard very little negative press before they pulled the PP funding. In fact, the anti-Komen people worked up such a storm agains them that I didn't even know that they used to donate/fund planned parenthood.
That's not to say that no one ever criticized them, of course, just that it was much less. And really, what sounds better/worse:
People criticize a breast cancer charity for giving money to an organization that performs abortions because they feel abortion is murder. S(o many pro-choice people seem not to understand this. If there was some charity for alzheimers that gave money to some organization that refered alzheimer's patients for care, but also performed euthanasia, don't you think some people would be upset about that?)
The alternative is what we have now Komen has decided to stop giving money to PP, reportedly because; A: it's under investigation, and B: Komen doesn't feel it's the most efficient use of it's money. And now all of a sudden people want to boycott Komen? Does that really make any sense at all?
And I'm sure the whole "business choice" line is a barb at PP being a "pro-choice" organization.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseChoice only matters to the left when a baby's life (or rather, a woman's convenience) is at stake. They reveal themselves more and more every day. These abortionistas are horrid people. Bravo to Komen for bravely standing for true values. Shame on PP for their continued infanticide.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseK-Lo, you are too modest. You know perfectly well "why Komen has to be demonized for its business choice."
It has become obvious, from today's screeching over Komen's business decision, that the screechers care not one whit about breast cancer. It is all about abortion, and only about abortion. Komen's statement that they want donations to be as effective as they can be to reduce breast cancer would be accepted by reasonable (and disagreeing) people if they too were also concerned about breast cancer. They do not, and they are not.
I, for one, smiled today. My mother died from breast cancer when I was a child, but I could not bring myself to contribute to Komen because of the Planned Parenthood link. Now I can.
