The Eternal Grace of American Politics

Interesting that, after losing the caucus yesterday, Newt Gingrich called Nevada a “very heavily Mormon state” — not “heavily,” mind you, “very heavily.” (What would that make Utah? A very, very, very heavily Mormon state?) I don’t recall his doing a Mormon count after the voting in New Hampshire and Florida. I wonder whether it will become a regular part of his campaign.

Also, will he tell voters across the nation that Romney denied kosher food to Holocaust survivors in their dying days? Or was that just for Florida? Southeast Florida, specifically?

P.S. I predict that, if Romney is the nominee and the race is close in late October, it will be Mormonism 24/7 from the Democrats. That and the Republican’s wealth. Plus the Democrat’s skin color (and the Republican’s). Mormonism, “plutocracy,” and racial politics — your unholy trio for the end of the campaign. And probably before, sorry to say.

So change the dynamic altogether. Individual liberty and a free market with sound money will make this country strong again. Only Ron Paul is offering what we need.

I'm really surprised Newt didn't say that Nevada was an "extraordinarily" heavily Mormon state and that he finds it "amazing" that he is having to point this "astounding" fact out to people, but then, of course, he is a historian.

Newt Gingrich: he may not be a superlative candidate, but he is the candidate who uses superlatives.

"extraordinarily" "amazing" "astounding"

None of which are superlatives.

So it's the electorate's fault Newt lost in Nevada?

It's those darn heavy Nevada Mormons that are responsible for this Mitt Romney nightmare.

Of course, Newt for his part has only won the state that started the Civil War and he appears to do well in only "heavily southern" states, but no matter.

Religious bigotry is dangerous ground for the Democrats. I think class and race politics will be more their cup of tea, but if they'd care to play the religious bigots, bring it on. Catholics, Jews, and now evangelicals have all been victims of religious bigotry.There are many who can put themselves in the place of the Mormons. I for one will not be waiting until they come for the Lutherans. Bigots give me a real case of the b**t.

Re: Mormonism

You better believe it will be coming this Fall is Romney is the nominee and it will be done in October surprise format so it will be still be there in voter minds on Election Day. Back in grad school, a good deal of the department was very anti-Mormon and Mormon-bashing bigotry was definitely part of the daily diet. This is the same personality profile you find in Obamites

Expect all sorts of "new" avenues of inquiry to open up - ties to polygamist groups? Does he wear sacramental underwear? Would about the racial history of the Mormon Church? Why the exclusionary rules about gentiles and Temples? An so on... expect the South Park episode to be repeated ad infitum.

Note this campaign will be done via proxies - the media, late night talk show hosts, and political surrogates. I mean what's the worst thing that can happen? Obama will lose Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Arizona? Pffttt. The Mormons will be thrown on the bonfire along with the 1%, Orthodox Catholics, and on and on and any other group that can be deemed the "Other" so the Great Uniter can get re-elected and lecture us on civility.

Speaking of the "Other" - what would Hannah Arendt make of all this?

I predict that when Romney gets destroyed in the general Nordlinger will blame the Tea Party.

Rinson, Or will you forget your prediction? Don't forget to vote for McCain, Dole, Bush I and Ford. All eminently "electable."

Of course not---there will be a reckoning; I intend to remind you all of every NROnik who stabbed conservatives in the back during the primary cycle.

Why, I've already clipped and saved the juiciest "I heart Mittens" and "you stupid conservatives" comments they've made.

We'll see just how well that game goes for the Democrat Party. The Media will probably eat it all up and successfully use anti-Mormon bigotry against Romney.

So, Obama is going to bash Romney for his "weird" religion? Doesn't that open the door to a closer look at the church Obama attended for 20 years? People from glass churches should not throw stones.

Gingrich is proving to be all the things his critics claim he is. Unreliable, impulsive and vindictive. When he wins, he behaves like a champion. When he loses, he behaves like a sore loser.

So let me get this straight ...

Obama and Axelrod will slam Romney 24/7 for being a Mormon;

They'll slam him for being a plutocrat, the very embodiement of the Republican Party, as they see it;

They'll use the race card constantly, and Romney is sure to give him plenty of twistable ammunition every time he speaks without thinking;

And the Republican Establishment is hell bent on nominating this guy, and NR is hell bent on smearing any of his possible opponents.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The hell with all of them.

Back Newt Gingrich and make him the front man for the second Reagan Revolution.

"I predict that, if Romney is the nominee and the race is close in late October, it will be Mormonism 24/7 from the Democrats. That and the Republican’s wealth."

Of course the Democrats have the advantage of these topics being focus tested now by the Republicans. If one or all of them resonate, you can't blame them for borrowing an idea the Repub candidates initiated and used in the primaries to their advantage. Thoughtless statements like Romney's "I dont care about the poor" certainly don't help matters. He's already practically wearing an ascot and top hat, it won't take much to induce the public to imagine a Rolls-Royce thrown in as well.
