Mitt Romney’s Problem: ‘Phony’

This remix, “Phony,” sums up Mitt Romney’s problem

I don’t understand why you keep pretending you aren’t rich.

Fake moderate turned fake conservative, what a terrible recipe.

Just to be clear I don’t agree with this singer about Romney. Except that it would be good if Mitt stopped his fingernails-across-the-chalkboard act of pretending to be a regular guy. It’s not going to work.

Americans like rich guys (cf. Donald Trump).

Romney’s disciplined, competent, focused — everything except authentic. The real Romney would be a much better candidate than the guy who is pretending he’s not rich.

Dear Ms. Gallagher,

Since Mitt Romney is over the age of 50, and since, by that age, most personalities are fairly fixed, is it not safe to conclude that the fake-seeming Mitt Romney is the REAL Mitt?

Why pretend otherwise? It only comes off as fake, anyway.

Americans LIKE Donald Trump? Americans LIKE a gaudy, blowhard vulgarian? What are you smoking?

That's the problem with Romney. We all know Obamas record, the most Liberal Senator, etc. And Mitt is no different, but NOW he a Conservative? Right.

Most people think Trump's a jerk. I wouldn't use him as a role model for anything.

This is what happens when musicians think their skills in music are exportable to other areas such as political analysis. That isn't to say I think Jay Smooth has musical abilities; I'll leave that determination to readers who have a better ear for hip-hop and rap.

Mitt doesn't come off as phony. He's quite genuine and as the primaries have progressed he's learned to shed the initial timidity surrounding his wealth. I'm also glad to see his speeches have grown more passionate lately. His understated approach, after all, is the principal reason his support has sometimes been lukewarm.

I am not defending Mitt Romney here.

But if Ms. Gallagher believes that Donald Trump is "authentic" or that people "like" him, I think she is pretty out there. The guy is completely over-the-top. The whole Donald Trump shtick is obviously an act in order to build a personal brand and get media attention. And he even fed into those birther conspiracy theories in order to pander to more ignorant conservatives, because at the end of the day, he thinks that a huge number of conservatives are idiots and that his birther pandering would be a way to get their votes. Donald Trump is not a conservative; he looks down upon conservatives.

Donald Trump is an actor. To criticize Mitt Romney for not being "authentic" COMPARED to Donald Trump has to be one of the most bizarre things I have ever heard.

If Donald Trump is authentic, then Stephen Colbert REALLY believes everything he says on his show.

The problem is that the fake Romeny IS the real Romney. This guy doesn't have a philosophical core that he's seeking to advance. Please, does anyone believe he has any agenda that he's running to advance? No, at best he's running to serve his own ego, and at worst he's running to win more political influence that he can sell to cronies.

Maggie, Romney has never once pretended he's not rich. If you have a shred of evidence that he has, by all means present it. Otherwise, I think a retraction is in order.

Why don't you tell us about your real problem with Romney, instead of playing the leftist game here with the inane video, and the false meme that Romney is not authentic.

It is also tiresome to see so many comments posted from people who don't bother to do their homework. Look at Romney's real record. You will find that he was a conservative governor. Why do you think his polls numbers were so low? They found out that the man truly intended to govern as a conservative, and did. Enough already with this never-ending ignorance on Romney.
