“I believe that women should have access to preventative health care services, but I also support going about that in a way that protects religious freedom.” His letter to Kathleen Sebelius is here.
The West Virginia compromise is still WAY too much federal intrusion into private business and people's private lives, but it is a lot better than Obama's offering...
Is there any way to get 7 more senate Dems on board?
That would be enough to break a filibuster and force Obama to veto a conscious exemption for religious charities (which I otherwise assume will pass the house & die in the senate).
If 41 out of 53 Dems stick with the president (about 80% of the caucus), I think that'll make for an even tougher reelection (and 2012 already looks tough for senate Dems).
1st ammendment or "free" contraception, Obama has put them in conflict, time to choose sides!
Even if it dies in the Senate, you would have a large number of Senators on records opposing the exemption. Pushing this vote through before the election might make it easier to pass AFTER the election.
This really isn't a capitulation. It is a false comparison. Women have access to reproductive services...all they have to do is buy it. For those who can't (or more accurately, those who want something for free) there are a jillion government programs out there to pay for it.
Many of these democrats are using the same wiggle language. It's clear they don't want to be bothered by those issues of free choice, religious freedom, or whatever. Obfuscation rules.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseDuh, I misread your post. I think I simply restated your main point.
