A number of outlets have taken today’s editorial on the race to be a call for Gingrich to leave and endorse Santorum. This seems like a clear misreading. All the editorial did in this regard was tweak the former Speaker by noting that on his own stated arguments over the last month, that’s what he should do now that Santorum has overtaken him. NR hasn’t called on anyone to leave the race–not Gingrich, not Herman Cain, not Gary Johnson. (Is he still in the race?) And given the views NR has editorially expressed about Gingrich’s candidacy, it would be pointless to offer him any advice at all.
"A number of outlets have taken today’s editorial on the race to be a call for Gingrich to leave and endorse Santorum."
That's exactly how K-Lo described it before her post got taken down. Not surprised that other folks were "confused."
Ramesh, it's no secret that NRO really, really likes Santorum and really, really doesn't like Gingrich.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYes, one of those outets which misread National Review's editorial was National Review itself. Kathryn's post linking to the article read:
"Our editorial advises this morning: the proper course for Gingrich now is to endorse Santorum and exit."

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNR's coverage of this nomination battle has truly been a disgrace. Editorials calling for candidates to leave the race have left us with a thoroughly unattractive choice, none of whom are likely to win in November. A truly Conservative journal, such as NR claims to be, would have pointed out Romney's many flaws and unelectability to its readers, and given Perry a pass on his early and minor debate flubs until he got the hang of them (which he did, well before his premature exit.) That way, we'd have Perry as a truly viable alternative to Romney, and a clear road to victory in November.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseRE: "NR's coverage of this nomination battle has truly been a disgrace."
Well the good news is that NRO has been thoroughly and completely revealed for what it is.
Although I've certainly been sorry to see my illusions shattered, I'd rather live in the light of truth. I think the consequences of their disgraceful actions will be well and truly revealed in the coming years. We'll be seeing many many more pleas for donations. We'll receive many more spam emails from them. And on and on it goes. I have no doubt that they won't make up in liberal subscribers what they've lost in conservatives.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIn Ramesh's defense, it's entirely possible Kathryn misread her own editorial.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHow can Ramesh complain about other outlets' reporting when, as Patrick J and Casey Abell have noted, Miss Lopez posted the same confused interpretation? How can you then delete her post without at least acknowledging it? This isn't even about supporting one candidate over another - it's about editorial integrity.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis. And it's hardly the first time NRO has whitewashed an embarrassing post. This Steyn post used to contain this math fail before NRO flushed it down the memory hole.
Captcha: "foul smelling"

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseFrom your infamous "Against Gingrich" editorial:
"Gingrich is not the only candidate whom we believe conservatives should, regretfully, exclude from consideration for the presidency. Governor Perry has done an exemplary job in Texas but has seemed curiously and persistently unable to bring gravity to the national stage. Republican presidential candidates have not been known for their off-the-cuff eloquence in recent decades, but conservatism should not choose a standard-bearer who would have to spend much of his time untying his own tongue. Representative Bachmann’s rise early in the primary season reflected the public’s hunger for sincere conviction; her later descent, following among other things her casual repetition of false anti-vaccine rumors, its desire that conviction be married to judgment. Representative Paul’s recent re-dabbling in vile conspiracy theories about September 11 are a reminder that the excesses of the movement he leads are actually its essence."
The difference between asking someone to leave the field and urging conservatives not to support them eludes me.
BTW, what was the subtitle of that editorial?
"Winnowing the Field."

Do you even bother to read your own editorials anymore, Ramesh?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAs just about everybody seems to agree, it's too late for a walk-back, Ramesh. Try "National Review Santorum Gingrich" in Google News, and every outlet on the web is blaring that NRO wants Gingrich out in favor of Santorum. You should just have left K-Lo's post up. Now it looks like you don't know what you're doing.
Of course, you probably don't know what you're doing. The captcha, and I'm not kidding: "lose face."
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseExactly. They should have left K-Lo's post up. Or, in retrospect, I guess they should have invited her to last night's Yearbook Committee meeting and told her what to say.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI laugh. Who's fooling who?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseConnecting the dots, it should be reasonably clear to anyone that NR prefers Santorum to Romney.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYou might want to read "Mitt's the One" by Ramesh, "The Case for Romney" by Jonah, or the Corner posts by anybody except Steyn, Levin, McCarthy, and Walsh before saying such silly things.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYou might want to read pretty much anything written by Lopez, Lowry, Gallagher, Heller, and a number of others before writing such silly things and exposing your own ignorance/delusions.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYou're a late-to-the-game RINO who's only proven in your time here a) you lack reading comprehension skills; b) you don't understand even the basics of political polling, and c) you can't even craft an argument.
On the basis of all three, I presume the "esquire" in your moniker refers to the magazine which forms the primary source of your education.
For those capable of cognition, the fact that one of NR's senior editors wrote "Mitt's the One" while the other was behind "Against Gingrich" --- just as Gingrich walloped Mittens, mind you---ought to be dispositive.
Otherwise, kindly point us to the piece entitled "For Santorum" from the Editors.
Or get to shutting up.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI am pretty gullible, but even I don't buy this post you made.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWait - I thought NRO was in the tank for Romney. Cmon guys, keep your conspiracies straight.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNational Review who? One more post on their road to irrelevancy. The NR the finger in the wind magazine.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWell, one thing is true: Given NRO's editorial history, there's no point in trying to give Gingrich any advice. They've been shameless unfair to him from the start. So much so that I've become very curious to know why; I'm struggling not to conclude anything too conspiracy-theory-ish. I'm genuinely baffled how conservatives whose opinions I generally regard highly could be so ridiculously wrong about Romney and Gingrich both (and their arguments are so absurdly unpersuasive there's got to be something else going on).
Anyway, I guess the obvious retort to KLo and everyone else calling for Gingrich to get out is that he's learned from Santorum's success that he was wrong, and the right thing to do is keep fighting and hope for another turn-around.
I will say that I'm hoping he does so, and that there is another turn around (though I'm not holding my breath). I've heard from too many of my "swing voter" friends that they'll vote for any Republican this year except Santorum. A Jewish friend of mine said he'd vote Republican for the first time in his life this year as long as it's not "that Christian freak." Of course, I think they're wrong about him. Conservatives are great champions of religious liberty, in part because they've spent a lot of time worrying about the opposite. So I'll support Santorum if he's nominated, but I think we've already snatched defeat from the jaws of victory if it comes to that.
