Robert Gibbs got his dress over his head over this? The context of the “phony theology” remarks per CNN:
The comments came at an event in Columbus shortly after the former senator from Pennsylvania said efficacy and safety improvements in oil drilling technology are considered by the president to be “a dangerous technology.”
“It doesn’t fit his pattern of trying to drive down consumption, trying to drive up your cost of transportation to accomplish his political science goal of reducing carbon dioxide,” he said.
Obama, he continued, is not motivated by “your quality of life.”
“It’s not about your job. It’s about some phony ideal, some phony theology,” Santorum said. “Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology. But no less a theology.”
Geez, I thought him stepping down as WH Press Secretary meant we wouldn't have to hear him anymore.
To Gibbs: It would be nice if you were intellectually honest and didn't insist on taking things out of context, misquoting, and using other tricks you picked up during your illustrious career.
To Santorum: The word you wanted is "ideology".
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseTo be against prenatal screening is beyond dangerous. First of all, heart defects can be found early with operations happening inutero. Secondly, blaming prenatal screening for abortion is like blaming the x-ray for the lung cancer. Santorum is falling into every dem meme. We can't win with a candidate like this.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseBeing against mandating that everyone MUST have it and banning it are two different things. The Left is setting the narrative and controlling the language, they are being aided by many on the Right in this effort.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse" To be against prenatal screening is beyond dangerous. "
You've precisely summarized the very backward thinking Santorum.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI'm surprised that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists ,
the American College of Radiology or Dr Paul hasn't reacted to
Santorum's dangerous absurdity
which if he got his way, would cost lives.
His moronic comments about amniocentesis and prenatal testing
were jaw dropping in their ignorance.
Procedures like amniocentesis help physicians monitor maternal and fetal health.
It's a life saving procedure that he wants to stifle.
Santorum's declaration that physicians customarily encourage abortions insults
the integrity and professionalism of physicians.
Just like Obama .
Trump is right, Santorum is the biggest gift the Democrats could have ever hoped for.
So we should not expect a nominee who is being attacked as a theocrat to be smart enough to avoid using terms like "theology" or referring to the Bible when discussing ENERGY policy? Really?
On a totally unrelated note, NR's contributors seem to be in near catholic (i.e. universal, not the church) agreement that the Republican catechism ( meaning belief system not the religious meaning) is best homilied (I just mean spoken about, not sermonized) by Santorum. I think they're winning me over.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe kind of theology he was referring to was not the kind familiar with the word would expect, the kind depending on the Bible. His theology is that of the gaia-worshiping Greens, who, like watermelons, are green only on the outside, but red through and through.
The Left, as they do, will turn the narrative into "Santorum seeks energy answers in the Bible, while calling Obama a Muslim".
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThese attacks on Rick Santorum are insane. Last time I saw something like this was with Sarah Palin.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe reaction of the so called "moderate" Republicans is identical as well.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYeah, and look how popular Sarah is with the general electorate. What's insane is nominating Rick Santroum. But then we did it with Christine O'Donnell, so why not Rick? He's O'Donnell write large, in terms of viability. But all the social cons and Tea Partiers thought Christine was a shoo-in too. Good Lord, this is a textbook case of political suicide.
Here's just a few of Ricks pearls of wisdom:
Married women should not use birth control, because it's wrong to have sex for pleasure alone.
Married women should not have prenatal screening.
It's God's will that women carry their rapists' children to term.
I know you don't like hearing this, but this stuff is just going to kill the GOP in the general. You are taking the GOP to a Goldwater level meltdown.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGoldwater's defeat was not due primarily to his policies but to the martyrdom of Kennedy that was exploited by Lyndon Johnson and the Dems. Goldwater was doing quite well in polls against Kennedy before Oswald acted. And Goldwater was no social conservative, so the analogy with Santorum is even farther off-base.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuse"Goldwater's defeat was not due primarily to his policies but to the martyrdom of Kennedy that was exploited by Lyndon Johnson and the Dems. "
Goldwater's defeat was about two things, primarily: His vote against the Civil Rights Act of '64 (which was broadly supported by Republican centrists) and the public perception of his somewhat flippant deployment of nuclear weapons, which the Girl and her Daisy ad played up.
Did the Kennedy assassination make things a bit more difficult for the GOP? Probably. But, there is NO WAY it accounted for the single most lopsided popular vote loss in American history. That was all Goldwater. He was the worst general election candidate in the history of horrible general candidates.
"Goldwater was doing quite well in polls against Kennedy before Oswald acted."
You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own fact. I do think the name of the person who was doing the best against Kennedy in the early fall of 1963 however, is interesting...

The déjà vu is a bit eerie.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThat's a conservative myth that's right up there with "Christine O'Donnell is electable" and "The Left is afraid of Sarah Palin." But you people are very good at seeing what you want to see.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThere is nothing 'small government' about Santorum. He is an interventionist who believes in relatively low taxes (but not the lower spending they necessitate). Aside from that he supports having the government intervene in how people live their lives.
I understand why the social cons love this guy, but I was under the, apparently misbegotten, impression that the Tea Party folks were about getting the government off our backs and out of our wallets. Instead, it would seem to be 'out of our wallets (at least until the bills come due) and into our bedrooms. Grand.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseMy impression is that the Tea Party folks want someone who will fight. That explains why there was a surge for Gingrich (no one's idea of a social conservative) and now for Santorum. They don't think Romney has enough fire to change Washington.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI'm not saying they're right or wrong, but that's how I read the polls.
I love how the conservative Catholics that NRO represents keep complaining about how they are the victims of government repression all the while they are supporting a candidate who wants to repress everyone else.
The liberal "war on women" mantra is not off base about the GOP if the party becomes the party of Rick Santorum.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGibbs and the White house are crybabies. Environmental extremists do have a theology. Its called paganism and earth worship.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSantorum also has a theology--i.e., Me-Pontiff. That's when this influence peddling statist with zero executive experience isn't expanding the size of the federal government with unfunded liabilities in the trillions & losing elections by nearly 20 points.
Team Obama got one thing right, quote: "The GOP primary has been a race to THE BOTTOM."
Got it.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSorry, is that first paragraph about Santorum or Obama?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI guess you guys only post viewpoints that you agree with at the time.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe champion of No Child Left Behind and mainstream republicans want this man to be the president. Thanks to this lunatic from Pittsburgh Obama is getting another term.
