‘Not the Marrying Kind’

I also have a little essay in Time this week on the latest numbers on illegitimacy. I suggest Michelle Obama would ultimately do much more for the welfare of children by making  marriage a cause rather than spending her time trying to get kids to do their jumping jacks.

I'm sure Michelle will be glad for the advice, because her chief concern is the welfare of the children, even if it's at the expense of leftist dogma.

"I suggest Michelle Obama would ultimately do much more for the welfare of children by making marriage a cause rather than spending her time trying to get kids to do their jumping jacks."

I suggest Rich Lowry would ultimately do much more for the welfare of children by making marriage a cause rather than spending his time trying to run a little magazine.

Seriously - I know it goes back to the 1790s criticism of the "rigid formality" and "royalism" of Martha Washington, but I have never understood the fascination with what the President's wife is doing. I have precisely the same opinion of Michelle Obama as I did, when they were First Lady, of Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan and Rosalynn Carter - they seem like nice ladies and I wish them well.

Of course, Mr. Lowry doesn't believe for one second that Michelle Obama would ever discuss with children the merits of marriage.

The political left NEVER discusses its moral views with children, as evidenced by our public school system, where younger and younger kids can learn about safe sex and gay sex (as if there's no inherent conflict).

Advocate marriage? Please, Rich! They're too busy proselytizing on the benefits of having two mommies and terminating child development at the outset of the imprisonment period known as "pregnancy", to have any time left on the merits of marriage.

Besides, to do so would require judgment, which the political left likes to pretend it never exercises.

"The political left NEVER discusses its moral views with children"

I only wish that were true.
The left loves to indoctrinate children into their morals.
Abortion is good.
Not giving everything you have to the govt is bad.

This sentence is contradictory!

"This sentence is contradictory!"

That sentence displays ignorance of the level of sarcasm deployed by the individual (me) to whom you responded.

But, thanks for bolstering, in a round-about way, that the left pushes their views onto children on a daily basis. If not, there'd be nothing contradictory about what I wrote.

In case you missed it, that was the point of my supposedly "contradictory" sentence.

Sorry, I missed it. The sarcasm didn't come through. Was the insult necessary?

A great non sequitur. I think she ought to champion missile defense--it won't matter how healthy our kids eat if we all get nuked, right?

She is no different than 'Reverend' Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton or any other number of prominent black leaders that put liberal politics (and defeating white Republicans) ahead of the welfare of their community.

There are men in the black community who proclaim the importance of school, responsibility, staying off drugs, being a Dad if you are one etc.

However, we don't know their names.

Bill Cosby.
Chris Rock.
Kat Williams (to a degree).

I'm sure there are others.

I remember the good old days when Obama tried to give a speech telling kids to stay in school and work hard. And the response was outrage from conservatives about indoctrination and socialism. Mark Steyn, of the Corner, accused him of attempting to create a "cult of personality" akin to Iraq or North Korea.

I can only imagine the reaction if Michelle Obama switched her cause from the all-to-controversial cause of child obesity and instead worked to maintain strong families.

I don't understand the dig at Michelle Obama. My mother, a lifelong Republican, has complained for two decades about how heavy our population has become. She shuddered at watching little kids drink "pop after pop", as they would say in the Midwest. Children's health and nutrition would seem to be an uncontroversial issue, but maybe I am missing something.

Also, I think it is great to have an example of two long-married African Americans in the White House who seem to be raising two well-adjusted kids. Isn't she a good role model for this issue, too?

A lot of Republicans have this delusion that if only politicians (of all people) preach about the value of marriage, that people who are having difficulty in their relationships or having difficulty finding a decent partner will be much more incentivized to do so.

You see, having politicians, like Rick Santorum, preaching about certain social issues is like a magical elixir that will transform society.

In truth, of course, this is all a bunch of wishful thinking. We don't live in an ideal world, and we never will live in an ideal world.

But that doesn't stop conservatives. Their argument is: if only we lived in an ideal world, we wouldn't need to use government to help solve social problems. Instead of actually working to solve problems, we need a President who preaches at us!

That this approach is doomed to failure and amounts to nothing more than wishful thinking while being fatally infected by unintended consequences has not stopped Rick Santorum from basing his entire campaign on the supposed power of the President as a preacher rather than a problem solver.

Remember what he said. "You know, here's the difference between me and the left, and they don't get this. Just because I'm talking about it doesn't mean I want a government program to fix it."

In other words. Rather than concrete actions to actually solve problems, all we need is preaching from whoever is President to transform us morally. This is delusional, but it is exactly what many Republicans believe.

Can't believe I'm about to write this: David Welker is absolutely right. I would point out that this mindset is not unique to Republicans or conservatives. The left has a moral agenda which they preach as well -- and which they are nearly always ready to impose using the power of government coercion. Catholic organizations must pay for abortifacient drugs. Well-off people must pay their "fair share," which is always MORE, no matter how progressive the income tax system is. Children should be introduced to sex ed in school, because parents cannot be trusted with this reponsibility. We have to fund everything from college educations for all to cowboy poetry festivals. Shall I continue, Mr. Welker?

Do you even empathize with anyone or think for a split second before writing this stuff? Let's stop and think. This recession has hit the younger generation the hardest. The unemployment rate in this country for 18-24 is something way over 15%. That doesn't even account for the massive underemployment The work a lot of young people are getting is simply terrible and low paying because wages have been stagnant against inflation for 30 years while the cost of college (student loans anybody), health care, gasoline, and every other basic staple has exploded. Combine this with the complete collapse in lending especially for houses and postulate how exactly young people in this country are supposed to create new households through marriage? Unless of course you want to advocate the new norm of starting new marriages at mom and dad's house which hasn't been done in Western Civilization since before the middle ages? Perhaps a bride price or a dowry might also help the young couple get started? Lets put a monetary figure on our family values and let the market decide!

Here's the facts Rich. The divorce rate among young people is down almost a quarter from it's peak in the 80's and still declining. The younger generation values marriage more than their parents or grandparents ever did because they know, first hand, what it does to people, especially to kids, because they were those kids. So please spare me and everyone under thirty the lecture. They lived it.

But then you choose to mix your profound ignorance with active malice by attacking the first lady for addressing the national health emergency of obesity that costs this country billions and affects nearly three quarters of the American population. She's out there doing something that tries to help people and all you can do is sit on the sidelines doing virtually nothing by comparison and booing and saying you could have done better. Tell us all, please, what other charitable works do you think could be done better. Perhaps Mother Teresa was merely an amateur and needed the assistance on the great Rich Lowry?

Seriously, just plain wrong on more levels than I care to count.

A very well-written article. Thanks for the demographics. I don't know how else I'd find them out.
