Algae, European Gas Prices, and Born in the U.S.A

As gas nears $5-a-gallon out west, the president, who has cancelled a key pipeline and frozen federal leases from Alaska to the East Coast, teaches us about American algae potential, in the way he used to emphasize the importance of tire pressure and “tune-ups.” He castigates the opposition for making political hay out of bad news, in the way he routinely did as a senator in compiling the most partisan voting record in the Senate. Energy Secretary Chu cannot and will not say a word about soaring gas prices, since he is on record not so long ago hoping that they might double — that is, get to $8- to 10-a-gallon as they are in Europe. The Energy Department can do almost everything Americans don’t want, but not the single thing they do want.

The more Afghans kill Americans, the more the president seems to apologize for our troops disposing of confiscated Korans, desecrated by Muslim-terrorist detainees. Would that Obama talk so deferentially to Americans instead of serially emphasizing their laziness, their nativism, and their past transgressions in the Middle East. The treasury secretary who oversaw $5 trillion in new debt, and who oversees an IRS that he himself not long ago tried to short, lectures us that a premium in taxes must be paid for the fact of our being born American. The first lady, who cannot keep from vacationing at Costa del Sol, Vail, Aspen, and Martha’s Vineyard, keeps reminding us, who do not go to those tony retreats or $30,000-a-plate fundraisers, that we must pay our fair share to a nearly insolvent government to help it help the less fortunate, 50 percent of whom pay no income taxes. Secretary of State Clinton, who not long ago declared Bashar Assad a “reformer” now says the thug must go, with State Department subordinates warning about Syrian “WMD.” If true, one wonders where Assad got them. If our allies were in crises — Israel with Iran, Britain with Argentina, Poland or the Czech Republic with Putin’s Russia — no one quite knows what America would say or do.

And always, in the midst of these problems, we hear of a “they” who caused all of the above.

From the behavior of the White House, you can conclude rising gasoline prices a real threat to his re-election chances.

You are correct sir.

The Dems have put a choke chain on the US energy sector for over 3 decades. We are at the mercy of oil speculators and ME political upheaveals today because we surrendered to the enviroloon lobby long ago. Obama found this non energy policy useful and wanted to do even more under his Cap & Trade scam but was urged to save that for later.

As with ObamaCare, it's about government control. He's got US halfway down the road to serfdom and his 2nd term will complete his promised "fundamental transformation." No one was quite sure what he was talking about back in '08....now we do.

The One must be moved from power and America must hang out it's OPEN FOR BUSINESS sign in the oil production game. The minute we show that resolve to the world, energy prices start to drop and our enconomy begins a long, sustained recovery.

Not to mention the number of miles driven falling off a cliff the last few months. Translation- reduced economic activity.

Truman: "The buck stops here."
Obama: "The buck stops there."

And now from Obama's latest talk about algae apparently being his solution to rising gas prices, I guess we can expect to see a stimulus proposal for seaweed-ready projects.

"Obama: "The buck stops there."

And "there" means George W. Bush's desk.

And in an America that's become an Obamanation...

Businessman: "My truck stopped."

If Syria does have WMD my first guess as to where they got them would be... Saddam. You know, the guy who supposedly didn't have any WMD. No one has ever explained what was in that long line of semis that rolled out of Iraq right before we rolled in.

My cartoon image of Obama's algae "plan" is him standing in front of a stripped Solyndra facility (with abandoned hazardous waste strewn about), pointing in the opposite direction and shouting, "Look, over there!"

See what happens when community organizing, Marxism, white guilt, and affirmative action meet. Not pretty.

Every day, Obama reminds one more of Carter.

Carter had his attack rabbit. Obama has his algae.

Disgusting is the only thing one can even politely say about Obama and his governance over the past 3 years. I never thought he could sink lower, yet this week with the murders of US servicemen in Afghanistan and Obama apologizes to a pack of seventh century goatherds and barbarians because a book which demands the annihilation of any and all who do not believe in it was inadvertently burned---just beyond belief.

Then the “pond scum” Prez says we need to put our faith in the enviro-nuts who believe algae is the road to energy independence, all the while closing drilling down in the gulf, Alaska, and off our coasts, while ignoring court orders to lift the moratorium on said drilling. And all the while telling us to check our tire pressure. This guy is economically; scientifically; historically; and culturally ignorant/illiterate, yet the MSM still shills for him. Incredible. I really have no patience for or with any person who supports this Marxist and his policies which are destroying our nation and getting our service men and women killed while he and Michelle vacation and party like Nero while Rome was burning.

If you are going to post comments like these, please be accurate. Nero did not party as Rome burned. Pure myth.

You are correct - Nero did not "party" as Rome burned - he fiddled.

I would observe Obamantor has fiddled away all his political "capital" while his hypocritical sidekick Michelle has fiddled away as many taxpayer dollars as she could get her sanctimonious hands on over the last 3+ years.

America will stop apologizing when it stops sticking its nose in other countries' business. The more extended our adventurism, the more embarrassing moments, more casualties and likelihood of blowback. Foreign intervention humility today= no need to apologize tomorrow.

The sad thing is that algae really is one of several promising no- fossil fuels (along with deriving oil from waste organic material and using GM microorganisms to produce oil); I first heard of it a few years ago and I've heard nothing to gainsay it since then. But now that the horse's behind-in-chief has decided to play politics with it, he's probably doomed it.

One thing about Victor Davis Hanson, he seems incapable of making an actual argument. He doesn't seem to really like going beyond the superficial.

Oh, contrast this superficial observation with this superficial observation. Oh so very clever.

It would be, if it were not so banal.

Another banal post from the superficial Mr. Welker.

Once again a "superficial and banal" comment from the Welkster. I think I'll listen to VDH's comments instead.

You are right that a superficial argument does not inspire a deep comment.

I think VDH can do better than he is. I would like to see him actually defend his point of view, for once.

VDH is all about juxtaposing diverse ideas (which are usually quite superficial) to make a point and to highlight supposed contradictions or tensions. This is fine once in a while. But VDH massively overuses this technique. You would think it is nearly the only thing he is capable of. The problem is that VDH rarely dives any deeper than this and makes an actual sincere effort to justify his own point of view. WHATEVER that is exactly...

One notices that VDH rarely puts any skin in the game by making any positive propositions of his own, but seems to prefer superficial snark from a safe distance. At some point, the whole thing comes off as rather phony.
