Kid Mitt

At last: Cool points for Mitt Romney.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – It had all the fixings of a Mitt Romney rally, and then Kid Rock hit the stage.

On the eve of the Michigan primary, musician Kid Rock sang a live version of “Born Free,” the official campaign song of the Romney campaign and a song that, until tonight, has only been heard in its recorded version, blaring through speakers at events from New Hampshire to Iowa to South Carolina, and everywhere in between. …

As Kid Rock belted out the lyrics to “Born Free,” Romney and his wife Ann stood and listened, tapping their feet, clapping and whistling in support.

Kid Rock is cool and I really like his music. The song Mitt picked for his campaign is perfect!

It was very cool that Kid played on the last day of Mitt's Michigan campaign.

Reminds me of the time Al Gore ran into Courtney Love and told her he was a huge fan. "Name a song, Al," was her response. I won't ask you to name a song, Sheryl, but if you don't mind, how old are you and what is your religious affiliation?

I'm in my 40s. I couldn't name a single Kid Rock song. But, Mr. Rock is a PRODIGIOUS participant with the USO. My first tour in Iraq, Kid Rock - along with Robert DeNiro and (I think) Louis Black - came to our operating base and was unbelievably gracious with his time. The troops loved it. I found him to be incredibly sincere with respect to the gratitude he showed with our men and women in uniform. It wasn't a publicity stunt. It was genuine.

I did two more tours - one more in Iraq and on in Afghanistan - and Kid Rock was in country both times (although I didn't get to see him).

I'm the last guy in the world to say what's "cool" and what isn't, but I'm POSITIVE Kid Rock is - warts and all.

I think Kid Rock is getting a little long in the tooth, but his 'cool' quotient isn't my concern. My point is that I suspect Sheryl's a religious conservative over the age of 35. Given her enthusiasm for Romney, she may very well be one of his coreligionists. Kid Rock, on the other hand, is an extremely profane artist who celebrates casual sex and illegal drug use. I doubt that Sheryl's purported fandom includes any awareness of this fact, or extends beyond Kid Rock's support for Mitt Romney.

Well, while poor Sheryl get's taken to the woodshed, I agree Kid Rock is getting long in the tooth. Doesn't mean his music is bad, or does music go bad when the artist hits a certain age?

As for me, I'm a 39 yo, non-religious, pot-smoking, die-hard conservative who thinks it's ok to enjoy some adult music while avoiding engaging in casual sex.

Devil Without A Cause and Rock n Roll Jesus are great albums.

Your description of Kid Rock is consistent with Romney's intro of the guy. He said that Kid Rock had asked Romney, whether if he became president he would be willing to help MI, Romney said yes. Will you help Detroit, Romney said yes. So Kid Rock agreed to play the song.

It made for a nice moment. Native son asking the would-be president to help his hometown. It fits right in with your description of Kid Rock's concern for the troops.

Cowboy. Come on guys, you don’t remember that one?

The guy went from rock to country and overall seems to be a very nice guy. As for you folks that think he is too old to be cool, first hang around a few 23 year olds and then remind yourselves that Keith Richards is 68. That should disabuse you of the ‘cool needs to be young’ notion.

Kid Rock is 41 years old..

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the "cool" label reminds of a story of only a few years ago when Morley Safer referred to Billy Crystal as a "young comic."

@gbh Uh, Kid Rock: great performer who is patriotic and loves his country...um yes! "Born Free" is a great tune!

Listen to some of his current albums which are country with a southern rock twist and a far cry from his earlier years....
