Chip on his Back

by Mark Steyn

I’m in Adelaide, South Australia on too beautiful a day to be indoors watching late-breaking developments from the nail-biting finish to the Vermont primary, but I did catch this soundbite of President Obama on the Oz news last night, and couldn’t believe he’d said what he appeared to. But he did:

When the chips are down, I have Israel’s back.

Aside from the unpresidential narcissism, is this modular-furniture cliche-shuffling really the best the famously silver-tongued orator and his speechwriters can do? And, if so, how hard can it be for GOP candidates to come up with something better than that leaden sludge?
