DO NOT DESTROY. OFFICIAL BLOGPOST.

by Jay Nordlinger

In Impromptus today, there’s pretty much the usual variety: attractive women, Communists in Central America, the death of Europe, Thomas Jefferson, Jimmy Carter, blah, blah, blah. But there’s one issue, quite minor, that seems to strike a particular nerve. I write,

I got an envelope in the mail. There was no return address on it. There were just the big, black words “DO NOT DESTROY. OFFICIAL DOCUMENT.”

Turned out to be a fundraising letter from the Republican National Committee, signed by Reince Priebus.

Dirty pool. I realize all’s supposed to be fair in PR and fundraising — but still: dirty pool.

Yes, I think so.

A reader e-mails, “Whenever I get one of those ‘DO NOT DESTROY’ letters, it goes straight to the trash — along with the ones that say, ‘You may already have won,’ or, ‘The favor of a reply is requested.’”

Oh, yes. (By the way, when we send wedding invitations, we tend to go British: “The favour of a reply . . .” Supposed to be classier, I guess.)

I have a tip for the RNC. You know what would best get my attention, and earn my favor? Something like, “UNSEAT DEMOCRATS, REPLACE THEM WITH REPUBLICANS. SAVE THE COUNTRY. GIVE!”
