Earlier reports about the Trayvon Martin tragedy summarized George Zimmerman’s testimony to police following the shooting thus: Martin jumped Zimmerman from behind when the latter got out of his SUV to check what street he was on. This makes little sense once you’ve heard the police tape — Zimmerman is heard getting out of his vehicle and admitting to the operator that he’s following Martin, so unless he stopped following the teen, went back to his car, got in, and got back out, there’s no way for this story to work.
A statement from the police chief describes things a little differently:
Zimmerman told police he was attacked by 17-year-old Trayvon Martin after he had given up chasing the boy and he was returning to his truck.
Why the discrepancy?
