Newt Gingrich may be axing a third of his staffers and asking his campaign manager Michael Krull to step down, per Politico, but he’s planning on staying the race all the way to the convention. On CNN this morning, Gingrich communications director Joe DeSantis argued that without Gingrich in the race, Mitt Romney would get the nomination. From National Journal:
“If Newt were to drop out of the race, it would actually virtually guarantee Mitt Romney the nomination,” DeSantis said. “If conservatives really want to rally around a conservative standard bearer… they need Newt to stay in to prevent a Romney nomination.”
A recent CNN poll showed that if Gingrich dropped out, Romney’s lead over Rick Santorum among Republicans nationally would go from 10 points to 15 points.
