Mark Steyn just wrapped up his annual trip to Hillsdale College, which culminated on Tuesday night with a public speech at the sports complex. It was the usual blend of comedy and terror. Here’s a bit from the school paper (which I advise):
“We have not just outspent America, we have outspent the entire planet,” Steyn said. …
Steyn criticized recent diaper-awareness days across the country, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) who put forward a Diaper Investment and Aid to Promote Economic Recovery Act last year.
“That ship has sailed,” Steyn said. “That diaper has filled.”
“At one point, I just lost it,” senior Catherine Sims said. “I was laughing so hard, I couldn’t breathe.”
Mark does more than just give a speech on these springtime visits. He gets to know the students here at the college, staying for a couple of weeks, teaching a one-credit crash course on column writing (enrollment limited to 12), and generally making himself available to the campus. Last night, he was at the newspaper office, helping the editors close the issue. He wasn’t holding forth, with drink in hand, the way he does at a reception on a National Review cruise. Instead, he was leaning into computer screens, trying to come up with headlines and showing that beneath the fame and flair, he has the soul of journalist. What an remarkable experience for those students. Thank you, Mark. Hillsdale College looks forward to seeing you again soon.
