Santorum Suspends Campaign

by Katrina Trinko

Notably, Rick Santorum did not endorse Mitt Romney in his speech just now in Gettysburg, PA announcing that he was ending his run to be the Republican nominee.

UPDATE: Mitt Romney just released this statement on the news:

Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.

And Newt Gingrich commits to staying in until Tampa in his statement:

Rick has waged a remarkable campaign.  His success is a testament to his tenacity and the power of conservative principles.

I am committed to staying in this race all the way to Tampa so that the conservative movement has a real choice.  I humbly ask Senator Santorum’s supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa.  We know well that only a conservative can protect life, defend the Constitution, restore jobs and growth and return to a balanced budget.

UPDATE II: “We made the decision to get into this race at our kitchen table against all the odds, and we made a decision over the weekend, that while this presidential race for us is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” Santorum said in his remarks. “We are going to continue to fight for those voices, we are continue to fight for the Americans that stood up and gave us that air under our wings that allowed us to accomplish things that no political expert would ever have expected.”

“I walked out after the Iowa caucus victory and said, ‘Game on,’” Santorum continued. “I know a lot of folks are going to write, maybe even those at the White House, ‘game over,’ but this game is long, long, long way from over. We are going to continue to go out there and fight to make sure that we defeat President  Barack Obama … and we stand for the values that make us Americans, that make us the greatest country in the history of the world, that shining city on the hill, to be a beacon for everybody for freedom around the world.”

And Ron Paul campaign chair Jesse Benton releases this statement:

Congratulations to Senator Santorum on running such a spirited campaign.  Dr. Paul is now the last – and real – conservative alternative to Mitt Romney.  We plan to continue running hard, secure delegates, and press the fight for limited, constitutional government in Tampa.
