In a press conference today, Mitt Romney reminisced fondly over past vacations in Paris with his wife Ann. “The last vacation we had there, walking around the city of Paris, walking not just on the Champs Elysees but walking over to the Jardin of Luxembourg and around the city,” he said in a response to question from a reporter about France. “It’s one of the most magnificent cities in the world, and I look forward to occasional vacations again in such a beautiful place.”
But while Democrats have been quick to use similar comments to paint Romney as out-of-touch with the middle class, it’s unlikely they will have any success using this particular riff — unless they’re willing to let the President appear equally out-of-touch. The Obamas visited Paris in 2009, making reservations for “celebrity chef Alain Ducasse’s restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower,” per People. Michelle Obama also shopped at a French children’s boutique, Bonpoint, “a favorite of Hollywood parents like the Jolie-Pitts and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes” with her daughters.
