Msgr. Clark, R.I.P.

by Richard Brookhiser

One of his notable qualities was his sense of humor: unillusioned, but not cruel.

At one editorial dinner at WFB’s he told of a set of antique dinner plates belonging to Cardinal Spellman, decorated with allegorical ladies. Msgr. Clark recognized them as mistresses of Napoleon’s marshals. He did not tell the cardinal.
