On the weekend talk shows both Nancy Pelosi and Dick Durbin referred to John Boehner’s insistence on spending cuts in return for any increase in the debt ceiling as “not responsible.” Do you agree with Pelosi and Durbin?
During the 2008 campaign you said (my emphasis added):
The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up the national debt from 5 trillion dollars for the first 42 presidents–number 43 added 4 trillion dollars by his lonesome, so that we now have 9 trillion dollars of debt that we are going to have to pay back–$30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.
You have added another $5,000,000,000,000 to the national debt in just three-and-a-half years. It’s now $15,700,000,000,000. That’s $50,300 for every man, woman and child. What adjectives would you assign to your actions?
The Senate has not passed a budget in three years. How would you describe such inaction?
In 2010, while discussing the 2000-plus page Obamacare bill that reorders one-sixth of the U.S. economy as well as the relationship between Americans and their government, then-speaker Pelosi said, “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what’s in it.” How would you characterize Pelosi’s statement?
Congressional Democrats passed the 1073-page, $800,000,000,000 stimulus bill despite the fact that no one had read the final version. Responsible or irresponsible? Why?
