A Little Note on Style


There is a great deal wrong with this Gail Collins piece on the alleged awfulness of Texas, but this passage stood out for reasons other than political content:

Texas just keeps growing, by leaps and bounds. (Think jackrabbit. It’s a good metaphor. A really, really large jackrabbit.)

If you have to explain to your reader that your metaphor is a good metaphor, it probably is not a very good metaphor.
