History and the HHS Mandate

Text

Mike notes the timeliness of the new biography of Thomas Becket — and does so on the memorial of Thomas More and John Fisher, which the Catholic bishops have keyed to the Fortnight for Freedom, as they call it, a period whose other bookend is Independence Day. A little history goes a long way toward explaining the Church’s strong response to the HHS mandate. Writing on how we got to where we’re at, George Rutler, who as a Catholic priest and former Anglican knows from Thomas Becket and Thomas More and John Fisher, shakes his head at “the appalling ignorance of history in our culture” and argues that such “isolation from the human experience has made it easy to confuse conscience with emotion and think religion is irrational.”
