My previous post was about employers using immigration to flood tech labor markets to keep wages down. But rather than just waiting for Americans to give up on tech fields, some employers are specifically excluding Americans from their recruitment efforts. A tech advocacy group called Bright Future Jobs has a new report out documenting want ads specifically seeking foreign visa holders over Americans.
All the “Johnny can’t do science” talk isn’t as risk-free as politicians seem to think. Voters may not care much about immigrant farmworkers, but when lawmakers talk about the necessity of importing Chinese and Indians because Americans are too stupid and lazy for skilled work, voters might notice that it’s their kids the politicians are talking about. I think this is why, despite the elite consensus that we need ever-more smart Indians and Chinese to keep our society functioning, such proposals have a hard time actually getting passed.
