No big surprises in the Michigan primaries yesterday. Rep. Pete Hoekstra defeated Clark Durant and will face Democratic senator Debbie Stabenow in November. Kerry Bentivolio, a “teacher and reindeer rancher,” captured the GOP nod in the 11th congressional district, to replace Thaddeus McCotter, who first failed to qualify for the ballot then abruptly quit his job as a Republican congressman; Bentivolio survived a write-in candidacy that had the backing of the GOP establishment. Democratic congressmen John Conyers and Gary Peters won their primaries; in redrawn districts, Conyers faced several challengers and Peters squared off against Rep. Hansen Clarke. In Detroit and its suburban counties, voters approved a tax that will keep the lights on at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
