Employment ‘Diversity’

by Roger Clegg

I have a piece in the New York Post today criticizing Columbia University for its faculty “diversity” efforts, and pointing out that hiring with an eye on race, ethnicity, and sex is not only wrong — it’s illegal. The Columbia example is particularly egregious, but this sort of thing is distressingly common among many employers, and not just in academia, either. The law has not given companies the free rein to discriminate that many of them seem to think it has, nor does this discrimination make any logical, empirical, or moral sense.
