Cecil Beaton, the English photographer and designer (he shot Elizabeth II’s coronation portrait) affected Edwardian fashion. But so did the Teddy Boys, gangs of fifties punks. One evening a Ted, spotting Beaton from afar, sidled up to him and muttered, “It’s on — tonight, with razors.”
So it’s on — an ideological election, about freedom and prosperity. Looking back, it looks to be the most consequential election since 1980. The Monica affair was a farce — Clinton’s fault, but our mistake. The Terror War is life and death — but you can’t fight a long-term war without economic and fiscal health.
