Representative Todd Akin (R., Mo.) pointed today to recent fundraising gains as proof of what he calls the enduring strength of his U.S. Senate campaign against Show-Me State incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill. The Akin campaign has raised some $100,000 online since he triggered a political tsunami by claiming that the female body is capable of resisting impregnation in cases of “legitimate rape.” Akin suggests that these contributions justify his decision to remain in the race. Akin is doing so despite nearly universal concerns among Republicans that his candidacy could clinch McCaskill’s reelection and jeopardize the entire GOP as Democrats tie every Republican candidate to Akin’s boneheaded and hurtful words.

If Akin’s $100,000 campaign infusion sends a message, and even bigger pile of cash for his potential replacement would send an even clearer signal to Akin: Bow out now.

Someone with the capacity to do so should register DumpAkin.com. That domain name appears to be available. Americans who would like to support another free-market Republican to battle McCaskill could donate money to such an effort. These funds would remain in escrow until such a contender stepped forward, and then would be transferred to that campaign. This could be a write-in candidate, if Akin refuses to leave, or his replacement, if Akin finally takes the hint.

My guess is that DumpAkin.com’s contributions soon would exceed Akin’s $100,000 donation surge. The bigger the DumpAkin.com pile grows, the louder the message will become. At some point, maybe, this indicator would prompt Todd Akin to end his campaign. The balance of the summer and this coming fall would be a perfect time for Todd Akin to put all of this unpleasantness behind him and pursue one of his passions: playing the guitar.
