Jonah, it’s odd that Canada is so fussy about not offending immigrants with its banknotes when their very national anthem is xenophobic (“our home and native land”), not to mention sexist (“in all thy sons command”) and militaristic (“we stand on guard for thee”). The French lyrics also contain religious references. The U.S. made the right call by adopting a song about an obscure battle in an obscure war, with the result that probably not 1 in 10 Americans and 1 in 50 foreigners has a clue what the words mean.
