A Weak Start for the Convention

by Ramesh Ponnuru

Over at Bloomberg View, I give a thumbs down to the Ann Romney and Chris Christie speeches. One reason I didn’t find her speech as terrific as most righties seem to have is that unlike everyone else, I don’t think “humanizing” Romney is one of the most important things the Republican convention needs to do. The most effective part of Mrs. Romney’s speech (“This man will not fail”) was a passage where she wasn’t trying to do that. So it’s not so much that I think she did a poor job — actually, her delivery was quite impressive — as that I don’t agree with the strategy underlying the speech.
