Memory Lane and Last Night

There was something I meant to say in my Christie notes, below, and forgot about. The thought has been jogged. Twice last night, Christie used the phrase “tough choices.” This was Mike Dukakis’s phrase — his constant refrain — during the ’88 campaign. He said it so much, William Safire, in a column, mockingly referred to him as “our tough little chooser.”

Ooh, Safire could mock. Good thing I wasn’t running for office then. (Hey, wait a minute, right: I’m not running for office now. Had kind of a Walter Mitty thing for a second.) (Better Walter Mitty than Walter Mondale.)
