Where’s the ACLU?

Text

You want to know why normal people feel nothing but loathing and contempt for the ACLU? Just look at their complete silence on this Mohammed-video business. Not a peep on their website, which is all war-on-women, get-out-the-vote Democratic-party talking points. This despite the fact that the FBI is being sent to hunt down the producers of material that is unquestionably protected by the First Amendment.

Remember that sanctimonious monologue in The American President, where Rob Reiner’s Fantasy Clinton extolled the ACLU and free speech?

You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can’t just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the “land of the free.”

Yeah, I guess that’s only applicable to expression that makes Republicans’ “blood boil.” This isn’t surprising; more than ten years ago, when the New York City authorities threatened retaliation against a billboard owner for an immigration-related political message they disliked, the ACLU refused to act, saying “there is a large and growing immigrants’ rights faction within the organization.”

The ACLU’s defense of  the free-speech rights of Nazis to wave their obscenities in the face of Holocaust survivors in Skokie was consistent with the group’s advertised image, as upsetting as it was to many people. For that same organization to slink away from an issue where the ACLU should be the leading defender of Americans’ right to produce material deemed by others to be objectionable is beneath contempt. It’s immaterial whether this decision stems from simple physical cowardice or whether, like other leftists, the ACLU in some sense shares the Islamists’ loathing of the West. Either way, the ACLU should be ashamed of itself, assuming that’s possible.
