Veep as Bully

by Kathryn Jean Lopez

I watched the debate on CNN International from Rome today (more on that second fact to come), and it seemed clear that Joe Biden got overconfident in his possibly greatest advantage: that people find him likeable — an impression that he’s that goofy next-door neighbor who’s been through a lot and done some honest work in his time. Thus the constant dismissive faces and laughing at Paul Ryan’s arguments. It’s indicative of the Obama administration’s overreach that is perhaps most palpable in its gratuitous assault on religious freedom in its Department of Health and Human Services abortion-drug, sterilization, contraception mandate, an outgrowth of the inherently (and manipulatively) conscience-hostile Obamacare itself. When people might have been worried a tenacious Ryan wouldn’t play well given the generational difference, Biden’s approach made him look the bully, in contrast to Ryan’s kind smile.
