Twice this morning, once on the Today show and then again on The Daily Rundown, my friend Chuck Todd ran the clip of Romney and Obama arguing about the Detroit bailout. Each time the clip pretty much ends with Obama saying “let’s check the record.” But then when the camera goes back to Todd he doesn’t check the record. It’s a bizarre and disappointing oversight on the merits, but it’s also just weird TV. When you see an exchange end unresolved like that with both men essentially exhorting people to consult the press in the morning, it’s just odd for the press to ignore it. Why run that clip at all if you’re not going to fact check it? I mean it wasn’t about foreign policy.
For the record, Obama was flat-out wrong. Confidently and condescendingly wrong. But you wouldn’t know that from watching NBC this morning.
